Lucy Hurst Obituary

Lucy Lynne Hurst March 12th 1937 January 19th 2018 Lucy Lynne Hurst passed away peacefully on a Friday evening at the age of 80 with her husband and son by her side. The beloved daughter of Richard Edward Orlob and Lucy Frances Tomlinson. She was born in Los Angeles, CA but grew up in San Francisco, CA and always considered herself to be a native of the city. A proud graduate of The Sarah Dix Hamlin School, Class of '55, she was a past member of the Spinsters of San Francisco and the Junior League of San Francisco. A true San Francisco socialite, her teens and twenties were spent attending cotillions, balls, charitable events and volunteering with many organizations throughout the San Francisco Bay Area. It was an era of her life she cherished as was evident by the joy with which she reminisced and the radiant smile on her face from the photographs of her from that time. She attended the University of the Pacific where she was a sister of the Tau Kappa Kappa Sorority. After college she worked as a medical assistant to a renowned cardiovascular surgeon in San Francisco. She married her husband of 48 years James Aiken Hurst Jr. in Sausalito, CA on April 26th 1969 and later stepped away from work to be a full time mom to their son James Aiken Hurst III. She eventually returned to work and became a teacher at Anthony G. Bacich Elementary School in Kentfield, CA; a job she retired from after a 25 year career. She loved working at Bacich and she was loved in return by her students and colleagues at the school. She was a resident of Kentfield since 1973 and she loved living in Marin County. She enjoyed spending time with her friends and neighbors and she loved her dogs, acquiring a special fondness for Golden Retrievers in her later years. She was a fantastic cook who loved spending time in her kitchen and she was a thoughtful and gracious hostess to the guests in her home. She enjoyed traveling, whether it was exploring the California and Oregon coasts or enjoying a sunset in Hawaii, and she spent many days on the water as well. A member of the Corinthian Yacht Club in Belvedere, CA, there were afternoons spent sailing on the Bay, trips up the Delta, cruises to British Colombia and Alaska, and a passage through the Panama Canal. She was the kindest and sweetest person most of us will ever know. She was caring and full of grace, and while she appreciated the beauty of the world, possessing a particular affinity for French Impressionism, she always understood that the true beauty of the world was the people with whom she shared her life and she always took the time to let her friends and family know that she loved them and that they were special to her. She was also strong, tough and brave in ways that always amazed us and made us all so proud of her. She was enduringly cheerful and optimistic; a bright, warm light in all of our lives. She was a wonderful and generous friend, a lovely and devoted wife, and the most amazing mom any son could have. She will be dearly missed and forever loved by all who knew her. We are all sad that she is gone but so thankful and fortunate for the time she spent with each of us. Donations in her name may be made to one of her favorite charities Guide Dogs For The Blind, P.O. Box 3950, San Rafael, CA 94912.

Lucy Lynne, you were the definition of a steadfast friend and created the gold standard for friendship. Despite the last few years when you were pagued with various medical difficulties you never wanted to talk about yourself but rather wanted to know "what's new in your life"! And you always responded with that contagious smile and appropriate comments. Your absence in my life has created a void that cannot be filled; I will miss you so very much. Rest in peace my dear and brave friend.
