Sister Marcella McMackin

Obituary Condolences

Sister Marcella McMackin, O.P. Sister Marcella McMackin, a Dominican Sister of San Rafael for 58 years, died peacefully at Our Lady of Lourdes Convent on January 17 at the age of 89. A native San Franciscan, Marcella McMackin was one of three children of Charles and Mary McMackin. She attended Star of the Sea School through high school. Her associations with the Dominican Fathers at St. Dominic parish and with two of the Dominican Sisters of San Rafael led her to enter the convent in 1955 and to take the name Sister Mary Joachim. She spent thirty-seven years of ministry in education, primarily teaching students in grades 5 to 8. She was greatly respected and appreciated in schools including Our Lady of Snows in Reno, St. Cyril in Oakland, St. Isabella in San Rafael and St. Dominic in San Francisco. Retiring from teaching in 1995, Sister Marcella served as an administrative assistant to the Prioress General until 2003 and continued to volunteer in the congregation's Finance Office until June 2013. Sister Marcella had a gift of attention to many details. She had a keen sense of humor and was a deeply knowledgeable and enthusiastic fan of her hometown teams, the San Francisco Giants and the San Francisco Forty-Niners. She also took tremendous pride and interest in the activities of her large extended family. Sister Marcella was pre-deceased by her brother, Charles McMackin and her nephew, Frankie McMackin. She is survived by her sister, Margaret McMackin, by her nephews, Charles McMackin, Joe (Diana) McMackin, Eddy (Sue) McMackin, her nieces, Carol (Greg) Young and Marian (Greg) Bradley, many grandnieces and grandnephews, great-grandnieces and great-grandnephews, and by her Dominican sisters. A vigil will be held on Thursday, January 23 at 4:00 p.m. at the Dominican Sisters Center, 1520 Grand Avenue in San Rafael. The funeral Mass will take place on Friday, January 24 at 4:00 p.m. in the same location. Sister Marcella will be buried in St. Dominic Cemetery in Benicia on Tuesday, January 28 at 11:00 a.m. Memorial contributions may be sent to the Dominican Sisters of San Rafael, Development Office, 1520 Grand Avenue, San Rafael, CA, 94901.
