MARIE COUDERC Obituary

Marie Graham Couderc Passed away peacefully on December 9, 2010 at the Redwoods where she had lived from 1997. A native of Mill Valley she was born on December 1, 1914. She went to St. Anselm High School and then Tamalpais High School. She was preceded in death by her husband, Albert F. Couderc. They were married in 1936. She is survived by her children, Diane Couderc of El Dorado, California, Ed Couderc (Georgia) of Kentfield, California, Alice Heard (Stuart) of Novato, California, and Alberta Yalon (Michael) of Florence, Montana. She will be sorely missed by her grandchildren, great-grandchildren, and her great-great-grandson. An active member of the Our Lady of Mount Carmel Catholic Church, she spent many years decorating the church altar and "filling the church with flowers." She was also active in the Our Lady of Mount Carmel School community from 1955 to 1962. She loved her garden. Her greatest delight was to get in her Jeep 4-wheel drive Liberty and head to the family house on the Eel River in Mendocino County. She was able to do this last in August of this past year. A highlight for her each year was the annual family Octoberfest at the Eel River where she celebrated with family and the many friends that made up the Eel River community. She made it to her 96th birthday and said, at that time, "I wanted to make it to 96 and now I can relax." Later in the year the family will be gathering to celebrate Marie's life.

Mary was our next door neighbor and special friend. On our son Matt's first day of the first grade, I was late getting home. Matt was locked out of the house and Mary was there to take him in.

Once when I had to go to the hospital in the middle of the night, we called Mary to come over and stay with the kids.

And, oh, the beautiful flowers she gave us, especially the red glads! And all she got from our yard were buckeye seeds for her fall decorations.

We have many fond memories of Mary and her family. We send our best thoughts and prayers to the family.

I was lucky enough to grow up next door to the Coudercs in Mill Valley. She and Al were both so sweet, and she was especially jolly. When I was 5, a family moved in on the opposite side of the Coudercs. When their 5 year old girl and I became friends, she let us forge a pathway through her beautiful garden, speeding up our visits together as well as helping us to become best friends. Our friendship endures today, 40 years later.
I remember being the garden waterer occasionally, during their trips to the Eel River, and boy was I nervous I'd let those glorious glads go! (Fortunately, that never happened.)
I visited Mrs. Couderc at the Redwoods in 2004, what a treat. I was glad to see her beautiful smile again, she was really a wonderful lady.
Both our families (from both sides of the garden) are saddened to hear of her passing, but so glad we had the chance to know her, and Al, and be a part of that neighborhood. All our best to the Couderc children.
