Mary Farbstein Obituary
Mary Farbstein Feb. 9, 1939 - Mar. 28, 2014 A great lady and proof that there are living saints among us, died peacefully with her family at her side. A longtime resident of Marin County, born in Somerville, Mass. Survived by her husband of 50 years Allan, children Steve (Barbara Blalock), Dave (Dawn), Paul (Tara) and Kathy Kay (Patrick Kelly). Grandchildren, Cody, Cam-ryn, Zachary, Kyle Farbstein and Dylan Kay. Also survived by sister-in-law Pat McGrath, brother-in-law Donald Farbstein (Rosemary), and many nieces and nephews from Marin, San Mateo and the Boston area. Preceded in death by her parents Joe and Mary Freitas, brother Jack Freitas, brother-in-law Bob McGrath, and son-in-law Douglas Kay Mary's real devotion in life was counseling teenagers. She ran the youth program, PYC, at Isabella's Church for over 20 years. She was the second mom, friend, advocate and mentor to many of the over 1000 teens who went through the program. She would often be found curled up in her sleeping bag on the floor amongst the teens at their annual getaway weekend. Affectionately known to all as "Mrs. Farb," a carryover from her days operating Farby's Deli and Ice Cream store. Also known as "The Commish" for expertly running many football pools every year, including Super Bowl! She loved the vacations at Lake Tahoe with the McGraths and friends. Favorite interests included playing games with her grandchildren and Bocce Ball. Her friends from the Book Club and her Pedro group were very dear to her. In recent years, trips to the local casinos and the annual Bellagio, Las Vegas were highlights. A Celebration of life will be held on Friday, April 4, 2014, 11:00 AM at St. Isabella's Church, 1 Trinity Way, San Rafael. Visitation with the family will begin at 10:00 AM at the church prior to the services. A reception follows the service at the Embassy Suites in San Rafael. In lieu of flowers the family requests donations be made in Mary's memory to Casa Allegra Community Services, 35 Mitchell Blvd., Suite 8, San Rafael, Ca. 94903 or the Michael Basso Memorial Foundation, P.O. Box 6112, San Rafael, Ca. 94903.
