I have been a Novato resident for more than 44 years. I travel San Marin Drive every day both to and from work. Not a day goes by when I do not think of Melody and her father as I pass though the intersection of San Carlos and San Marin Drive. This coming May, it will have been a full ten years since this awful tragedy. May Melody's soul continue to rest in peace and may her family always find the strength to cope with the loss of such a beautiful young lady.

Dear Melody,
I miss you so much. It's been over a year since I've hugged you, since I've kissed you goodnight, since I've held your hand. I miss your smile, your love, your laugh.
I adore you, and I love you so very much. I loved you from the time you were born and only grew to love you more each day. I was awed by your love and your beauty. You were small in size, but your love was so very powerful.
I hope that your free spirit is happy. I hope I am living a life that you can be proud of. I was so proud of you, my sweet Melody, I hope that you can be proud of me, because I am doing the best I can for those around me. I hope that when the time comes for me to see you again, you will take my hand, if there are hands in "that other place" and say to me, "Good job Daddy, and welcome home."
I love you more than words could every say, Melody.
Your dad,
Aaron

“I never meant to leave you,
Could I have only stayed;
We would be going on in life,
Now all the hopes and dreams we shared,
Are but sweet memories;
For you to tuck inside your heart,
Now when you remember me,
Remember all the good times,
And all the joy we shared;
Remember how you touched my life,
And wipe away your tears;
You still have many miles to go,
And still have many years,
Don’t look back…look forward,
This day is a brand new start;
And as you travel on in life,
You’ll take a bit of my heart.
I never meant to leave you,
But still you’ll not be alone;
For as long as my love lives in you,
I’ll never really be gone.”

Dear Osheroff Family,
I am so sad for your loss. My family lives right off of San Marin Drive and we cross paths with that fateful crosswalk daily. Very often late at night after i tuck in my daughter and give her one last goodnight kiss - i sit outside and look above at all the stars in the sky. I make a wish and often make mention of your beautiful Melody. I think of her often and it reminds me to hug my daughter a little tighter and tell her i love her as often as possible. Thank you for touching our lives.

Dear Melody and the Osheroff Family,
I share my deepest condolences to your family in your time of hardship and sadness. Although I wasn't lucky enough to know Melody personally, I often remember seeing her at the Novato Youth Center, usually with a large book and overflowing backpack in tow. She was always there to help people with their homework, showing off her intelligence along with her huge heart. As a resident of San Marin Drive, my parents, my sister and I routinely walk and bike ride across that fateful crosswalk. After all these years, I would've never predicted that it would be the site of such a terrible tragedy.
I want to thank Melody for this important lesson she taught me: live every day to the fullest, because you never know when it will be your last.

God sent a down a little angel to us, her name was Melody. He shared her just for a little while, to remind us to be gentle and to be ready with a smile.
She was indeed a little package but held a spirit so bright, that she brought a community together on a warm summers night. Through tears and sorrow she reminded us to hug but the most important lesson was that we never forget to love.
So we tomorrow we celebrate her life, her time here with us and know she is back home above, and not to forget the lessons she taught us to share a smile, a hug, be gentle, and to love.
Thank you Melody for sharing time with us and touching our lives.

Dear Melody,
After two months, it is still barely understandable that you are no longer here on earth, that there are no more opportunities to share time, pick bouquets from the garden, talk about life, build sandcastles at the beach, sit at the kitchen table and see what inventive and creative drawings appear.
Know that the time you shared with us was always special and appreciated and that you will forever be loved.
Although your life was short, we think it was a good one, full, surrounded daily by people who cared about you and a cat who loved you and misses you, too.
After a shocking and abrupt ending, we trust you are in a place of peace.

Dear Kim, Aaron and Melissa,
My earliest memory of Melody is when she was less than a year old and used to look up intently at you, Kim, from underneath her exceptionally long black eyelashes, while we nursed after returning from work to the Novato Youth Center.
But I have a wonderful memory of Melody from only a few months ago: she was skipping across the San Ramon play yard, full of joy and entirely unselfconscious. I remember taking a deep breath and thinking that she embodied the unique brand of happiness children possess before they learn to worry about how they look to others or about what others might think of them. And I take a little bit of solace from the thought that she was still filled completely with that pure joy. It’s an image I replay in my mind whenever I think about how heartbreaking it is for you and for the world to have lost her.
You and Melody are ever present in our thoughts,

I'd like to share this poem given to me years ago...it seems fitting to Melody:
Miss Me, But Let Me Go
When I come to the end of the road
and the sun has set for me
I want no rites in a gloom filled room
Why cry for a soul set free.
Miss me a little, but not too long
and not with your head bowed low
Remember the love that we once shared
Miss me, but let me go
For this is the journey that we all must take
and each must go alone
it's all a part of the Master's plan
a step on the road to home.
So when you are alone and sick of heart
go to the friends we know
and bury your sorrows in doing good deeds
Miss me, but let me go.

Dearest Kim, Aaron, Melissa, Grandpa Mel and Grandma Mitsu,
Melody's passing leaves all of us with an overwhelming emptiness. Tears often erupt, triggered by a book/poem, a flower, a thought. But Melody's family, friends, community showed how her magic survives--she reminds us to hug our loved ones, to make special moments and treasure our time. Kim, Aaron, Mel, Mitsu--your bravery to focus on moving forward helps all of us, but especially Melissa. In honor of Melody, the hearts and characters of neighbors, friends, family and even strangers have emerged to show incredible compassion and generosity. May the goodness and love of all continue to console your void. Our Love and Prayers are with you all.

To: Melody,
You changed my life. Your laughter would make anyone smile. You were caring, funny, joyful, full-hearted, you were just wonderful! And most of all, you were a true friend to have!
I will miss you and your smile and the good days back then when we were best buds. All I really want to say is that, "I love you, and nothing can take away the memories that we had together, and if I were to make one wish it would be to have one more day to spend with you."
All my wishes to you! Why did you have to go?!!

Dear Aaron,Kim,and Melissa,
We will never forget your sweet Melody. I didn't know her well but I certainly knew who she was. I met Melody when she was in first grade at San Ramon and I was a long term sub for another first grade. She caught my attention by her petite size and her mighty ability to read. I also remember the older kids liked to pick her up because of her size. My daughter, Carrie, was one of those big kids and was Melody's big buddy that year. Carrie was so sad when Melody died. She couldn't believe tiny little Melody, the girl who was so smart, was gone. I continued working at San Ramon as an aid and enjoyed watching Melody grow. We are all so sadden by her death. She will never be forgotten.

Melody came to us as an infant in 2000 and grew with us at the NYC for all 9 years of her life. She was always joyful, bright and adventurous. NYC teachers watched Melody evolve into a smart and caring 4th grader and a wonderful big sister, with exceptionally involved and caring parents. Some of Melody's fellow participants at the NYC had these things to say about her, "She was smart and kind; thoughtful; a nice friend; she helped me with my homework." We are extremely saddened that Melody's life has been cut so short and our hearts goes out to the Osheroff Family during this difficult time. Melody will be missed at NYC.

Though it has been 7+ years since I have seen Melody, I still remember her as is it was 7 days ago.The spread of time did not impact the image of her in my mind, and I am grateful that I got to spend the time with her that I did in her early years.I think that may speak volumes on how huge her spirit was, something her little body couldn't contain!Melody and your family have been in my thoughts and prayers often lately.Take care of each other.

Kim, Aaron, and Melissa,
My heart aches for all of you at this time. I am so sad that we never had a chance to meet Melody in person. I am grateful that you, Kim, were so articulate in expressing how proud you are of your two girls so that I got just a glimpse of how special Melody is.
We will continue to pray for all of you in the coming days and months. Although we live many miles away from each other, please know that we are thinking of you and send our love to all of you.

Our hearts are saddened by this tragic loss. We think of Melody often, especially when I drive my son to preschool on San Carlos. He says her light is still shining even though she isn't here. Seeing how she touched so many lives, I know this is true. We wish we could have known her. We hold you in our thoughts and wish you peace and love.

There are no words to express the sorrow we felt at the loss of Melody. Although we have never met, you are in our hearts and prayers from that day. May God give you strength and courage now and in the days and years ahead as I am sure Melody now watches over all of you as an Angel in heaven.

For nearly ten years, your sweet Melody charmed us with her unassuming beauty, her easy smile, her genuine graciousness, and her carefree spirit. She lives on in each of you and in all of us blessed enough to have known and loved her.

There are no words to express my heartfelt sympathy and condolences at the loss of your dear Melody. I had met her on several occasions when Kim brought her to the office. She had a gentle, quiet presence filled with kindness and compassion. You gave her a love filled life. In that, may you take comfort.

I read Melody's obituary on Father's Day...What a beautiful tribute to your daughter. It reminded me of this poem that I will leave with you.
An angel with a radiant face,
Above a tree branch bent to look,
Seemed her own image there to trace,
As in the waters of a brook.
"Dear child! Who me resemblest so,"
She whispered, "Come, oh comewith me!
Happy together let us go,
The earth unworthy is of thee!"
With our deepest sympathy,
