Neal Hobson Sorensen Obituary
Neal Hobson Sorensen Passed away quietly on February 6, 2013 at home in Novato, California. He was a vibrant 91 years young. Neal was born April 5, 1921 in Brigham City, Utah. He grew up in Venice, California, graduated from Venice High in 1939 and served an LDS mission to Western Canadian from 1942-1944. He and Darlien Marie Merrill were married in the Salt Lake City Temple on August 20, 1950. Neal was the proprietor of The Candy Jar in San Rafael, CA on 4th Street for 28 years. He was a self-taught candy maker and his "World Famous Brittle" would attract people to his shop from blocks away because of the amazing aroma. Locals knew him as the Candyman and crowds who would often gather to watch him make candy. While operating The Candy Jar, he also worked as a stagehand and "spotlighted" stars such as Dorothy Hamill, Shirley MacLaine, Blackstone the Magician, and David Copperfield. He worked the 60's rock scene at the Winterland Ballroom, and went on to work for nine years as the stage manager at the Warfield Theater in San Francisco. Neal's career was varied and unique, but his family was always the most important aspect of his life. Neal and Darlien shared an amazing life together and their relationship exemplifies true love and lasting companionship. Neal loved great literature and reading, and always had time to read to his children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Having grown up during the Great Depression, he was thrifty, resourceful and could repair nearly anything with whatever was on hand. He was humble, witty, generous, kind and an example to all who knew him. Neal was especially adored by his grandchildren. He was beloved by his family and will be greatly missed. He is survived by his wife, Darlien Sorensen; brother, Blair Sorensen; sister, Jenifer Banz; five children (and their spouses), Merrill (and Jodi) Sorensen, Janet (and Jim) Hunt, Brent (and Ginger) Sorensen, Robin (and Ted) Kendall and April Sorensen (and Dave Estes); 17 grandchildren; and 11 great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents, Elick Sorensen and Margret Sorensen and his sisters, Glory Sorensen and Gae Romero. A memorial service will be held February 13th at 1:00 pm at the LDS Church, 787 Kendon Ln., Novato, CA.
