Reverend Peter McDonald Obituary
Reverend Peter McDonald Father Peter McDonald beloved, retired pastor of St. Anselm Church, Ross, CA, passed away May 4, 2012. Fr. McDonald was born December 19, 1934 in Mullinavat, County Kilkenny, Ireland, where he grew up with his two brothers and sister. He studied at Saint John's College in County Waterford, Ireland. On June 14, 1959, Fr. Peter was ordained in Ireland for the Diocese of Mobile-Birmingham in Alabama. Initially, Fr. McDonald was assigned primarily to campus ministry. His bishop, Most Reverend Joseph Vath, stated that he undertook "splendid counseling work with students". In 1974, he moved to San Francisco and joined the staff at St. Emydius Church where he served with his fellow seminarian, Fr. Ed Phelan. He later was an Associate Pastor at Our Lady of Perpetual Help Church in Daly City. In 1981, Fr. McDonald was appointed to St. Anselm, arriving just as the flood waters receded from the church steps. He was named Pastor in 1983 and continued in that ministry for another 18 years. His parishioners appreciated this loving, gentle, kind and faith-filled pastor with a "twinkly" sense of humor. Fr. McDonald lived at St. Anselm Church until 2010. Each year he travelled home to Ireland. In recent years, he accepted the invitation of his friend Fr. Mike Healy to stay at St. Bartholomew Church in San Mateo, but as his health declined this year, he moved to Nazareth House in San Rafael. Fr. McDonald's brother, Richard; his sister-in-law, Brenda; and his nephew, Peter, were with him in the days leading up to his death. He is sorely missed by all the nieces and nephews of the McDonald and Purcell families in Ireland, the US and the UK. A Vigil service will be held Thursday, May 10, 2012, 7:00 p.m., St. Anselm Church 97 Shady Lane and Bolinas, Ross. A Funeral Mass will be celebrated Friday, May 11, 2012 10:00 a.m. at St. Anselm Church. He will be buried in Mullinavat, Ireland. In lieu of flowers donations to St. Anselm School, 40 Belle Ave., San Anselmo, CA, 94960 would be appreciated.
