Sophia Thanos McDonald Oct. 10, 1913 - May 26, 2012 Sophia McDonald, age 98, a resident of Novato, passed away peacefully on May 26, 2012. Beloved wife, aunt, sister and friend. She was actively involved and a member of the First Presbyterian Church of Novato. She took pleasure in baking, gardening and sewing. A resident of Novato, she was predeceased by her husband of 51 years, Romie McDonald, her twin sister, Georgia Rothchild, and brother Jim Thanos. Born in San Francisco on October 10, 1913, to Ella and Peter Thanos. The family lived in Lodi and Stockton with their three children, Sophia, Georgia and Jim. After 18 years, they moved to East Oakland where Peter opened up his own barber shop. After high school, Sophia and Georgia attended beauty college and ran the beauty shop next to their father's shop. In 1946 looking for a fresh start, Sophia enrolled in dental school and after graduation was employed as a dental assistant at Hamilton AFB. While living in San Rafael, she met her future husband, Romie McDonald, and they were married in 1950. In 1955 they moved to Novato to open McDonald's Jewelry store. Working side by side, they owned and operated the store until they retired in 1976. Sophia leaves behind her loving family, nephew Roger Clark of Los Altos, (wife Karin) and their children, nephew Jim Thanos (wife Heather) of Perth, Australia, and their children.
