Stuart D. Burt Obituary
Stuart D. Burt Age 93, of Bellingham, WA passed away Sunday, March 30, 2014. He was born on March 5, 1921 in Victoria, BC, Canada to Muriel and Edgar Burt. His parents traveled to Canada from London, England in 1917 after his father had been severely wounded in France during World War I. The family moved to San Francisco in 1923, then to Marin County in 1936. Stu met his future wife, Jeanne Landrock, while attending Tamalpais High School where he graduated in 1939. After graduation, Stu worked for an insurance brokerage in San Francisco until he volunteered for the army in August 1941. He spent four years of active duty in the army, two of those years in Iceland. Upon returning from Iceland, Stu married Jeanne, the love of his life, on May 4, 1944 at her parents' home in Mill Valley. They returned to Fort Monmouth, New Jersey where Stu was stationed and continued to live there until his discharge in October 1945. When back in Marin, Stu attended College of Marin and UC Berkeley, graduating in 1949. After graduation, Stu joined the Air Force Reserve as an officer and served over 20 years in the reserves retiring with the rank of major. Stu began his insurance career as an independent broker. He opened his own insurance agencies in Mill Valley, Tiburon and Corte Madera. Later, he merged into and helped form Redwood Empire Insurance Agency in San Rafael. Stu was an insurance broker in Marin County for over 40 years. During his career, Stu was affiliated with the Tiburon Chamber of Commerce, Marin Independent Insurance Agency, Rotary Clubs of Mill Valley and San Rafael as well as Sirs Branch 47. He was a 60 year member of the Marin Lutheran Church. As a teenager living in Belvedere, Stu developed a passion for sailing. He loved crewing on sailboats year round. Later, he enjoyed outings with his family on their Sunfish and sailing adventures with friends. As an avid golfer, Stu looked forward to his weekly "Dawn Patrol Foursome" at Marin Country Club where he was a member for over 30 years. A highlight of Stu's golfing career was playing a round of golf at St. Andrew's. Traveling and cruising with Jeanne to numerous countries around the world was a special joy. Stu was a great friend to many. He was a very likable and social person who enjoyed meeting people from all walks of life. He had a wonderful sense of humor and always enjoyed the opportunity to tell a good joke or story. Stu also had a special affinity with children. Not only did he love his own grandchildren dearly, he loved all children. For several years he volunteered at Loma Verde School reading with children and offering assistance in the classroom. Stu was devoted to his wife and family. Jeanne and Stu would have been married 70 years this May.
