Obituary Condolences

Vida Bower Remy 1921 - 2013 Vida Louise Remy died after a very short illness surrounded by her Marin County nieces and nephews on Monday August 26th. She follows her beloved husband Robert Remy, who preceded her in death in March of 2006. Vida was born in Kansas City, Kansas on December 21, 1921 and graduated from Kansas State Teachers College in 1943. In June of that year, she enlisted in the United States Coast Guard and proudly served as a SPARK until the end of 1945. Shortly after that she arrived in the Bay Area and worked in the Hiring Hall at Marin Shipyard, which led her to her meeting with Bob who was home on leave from the Army. As production wound down at the Shipyard, she was offered another opportunity to work on a rebuilding project for Morrison & Knudsen, this time on Guam, where Bob was serving. Love bloomed there and they were married in a military ceremony on Guam on August 9, 1947. After settling in Marin, Vida finally began her career as a teacher at St. Raphael School in San Rafael, where she taught for 30 years. Vida and Bob had a very full and active life indulging in their shared love of travel, which took them all over the world. Vida is survived by her sister Doris Tooney of Delaware, numerous nieces and nephews all over the US, including Jeff Cox of Oklahoma; Billie Barbash, Robert, Andrew, Chris and Steven Burton of San Rafael; and Ron and Cammie Barbash of San Anselmo; who will all miss her dearly. A private burial took place on Friday August 30th at Mt. Olivet Cemetery in San Rafael. Those wishing to honor Vida can make a donation in her name to St. Raphael School, which will enhance her bequest.
