Dr. W.T "Wally" Berner Obituary
Dr. W.T "Wally" Berner Wally, 96 years young, passed away peacefully on September 17th, 2013, with his family and pastor at his side, from complications due to a recent fall at his home. Wally was born and raised in Santa Rosa California, one of ten children of Rev. and Mrs. August Berner. He attended Santa Rosa Junior College and Kansas State College where he earned a degree in Veterinary Medicine in 1942. Upon graduation he joined the army and was stationed in Fort Worth, Texas, where he met and courted the love of his life Norma Jean. They were married in 1943 prior to his deployment in what was then, Burma, until the end of WWII. After the war, Wally and Jean started their life together in Marin County. He soon built the San Rafael Animal Hospital, which he operated for 34 years. In 1981 Wally retired and began his second career, growing fruit and vegetables at his home in San Rafael, much to the delight of family, friends and neighbors who benefitted from his labors. He was a long time member and officer of the Optimist Club of San Rafael. He was an avid golfer and member of the Meadow Club in Fairfax for 65 years. He never stopped trying to figure out the perfect golf swing as his many friends know so well. Wally, a man of unwavering faith, has been a member of the Trinity Lutheran Church in San Rafael since 1946. He played an instrumental role in the acquisition and building of the church at its present location. One of his great pleasures was providing Christmas trees for the church every year. He is survived by his wife Jean, their three children and spouses: Stephen and Charlene, Karen and Ron, Peter and Charlotte, four grandchildren, Ryan, Kenneth, Samantha and Heather along with six great grandchildren. He is also survived by a sister, Martha and the many children and families of his brothers and sisters. We are at peace in the knowledge that Wally is at home with our savior. A celebration of his life will be held on October 19th at 11:00am at the Trinity Lutheran Church, 333 Woodland Avenue, San Rafael. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests a donation to the Trinity Lutheran Church, or a charity of personal preference. Keaton's Mortuary serving the family.
