Mary Brooke McPherson Obituary
Mary Brooke McPherson Died June 7, 2014, the 70th anniversary of D Day, a day she witnessed with a heart full of fear and pride. Born to Mary Narcissus Wickersham, who left Georgia on her own as a young single woman and worked her way across country at various writing jobs and ended up working for a journalist at the San Francisco Examiner named Annie Laurie, a pseudonym for one of the country's first sensationalist (AKA: yellow) journalists. Her father, Paul Goddard Wickersham of Philadelphia, died when she was 10 leaving Mary Brooke and her mother to fend for themselves. Mary Brooke was a proud native San Franciscan, graduating from Lowell High School and attending the University of California at Berkeley. She loved to travel throughout California and revel in its history and discover small towns throughout the state. She was a lifelong didact, self educated and always ready to deliver an informative narrative on any historical topic. Blessed (or as her children might say, cursed) with unending intellectual curiosity, she was a voluminous reader and her children never lacked for presents to give her at holidays - books were her passion. If books were her passion, her friends were her sustenance. She loved her family but sustained her sense of her independent self with the love of her friends and welcomed their enrichment to her life. Her sense of self and of self confidence was a special gift given to many only children, of which she was one. If you were looking for an opinion, Mary Brooke had one, generally backed up by research. A long time docent at Octagon House (National Society of Colonial Dames), she regularly commented that the donations were higher on the days she led the tours. She was also over a 40 year member of Marin Charitable, an original member of the Masque Unit, and a longtime member of both the Town and Country Club and the St. Francis Yacht Club, where many family celebrations were held over the years. Married for 66 years to Charles Denver McPherson (Retired Lt. Col. USMC), deceased, 2006. He served in the South Pacific theater and met Mary Brooke on a double date (he with another woman and Mary Brooke with another man) while he was in San Francisco. Their first home was a Quonset hut in El Centro California on the Marine base. He became a partner in a Montgomery Street CPA firm; Muncy, McPherson, McCune and Dieckman. She is survived by her two children, Wendy Brooke McPherson of Menlo Park (Djuna Woods) and Michael Charles McPherson of Atherton, (Ann). Three grandchildren Kelsey Ann McPherson of Washington DC, (Steven Siger), Charles Belmont McPherson of Portland, OR. (Jenna) and Todd Reynolds McPherson of San Francisco. One great grandchild, Jack Kenneth Siger. Any contributions should be directed to Octagon House, 2645 Gough Street, San Francisco, CA 94123-4402.
