Zaven Tatarian Passed away unexpectedly on May 6, 2009 in San Rafael, surrounded by his loving family. Zaven was the devoted husband of Ruth, loving father of Gregg, Marc (Kristi), and Chris. Cherished grandfather of his "babies", Sean, Danielle, Jennifer and Michael. Zaven was born in Zagazig, Egypt in 1923. He spent his childhood in Cairo and Lebanon, an upbringing that gave him a love of culture, art, and language. He excelled as a student and was fluent in four languages, prior to leaving for America at the age of 22. He traveled throughout the U.S. and Canada while pursuing his education and ultimately graduated from UC Berkeley in 1951 with a degree in Architecture. While working at an architectural firm in San Francisco, he met and married Ruth, the love of his life. As a partner at Haines, Tatarian, Ipsen and Associates, he left his mark on California by specializing in the design and construction of public schools. Zaven continued to pursue his love of culture as he and Ruth, his companion for all life's adventures, traveled throughout the world. These experiences never surpassed his enjoyment and love of his friends and extensive family. He shared great wit, gentility, and wisdom, along with good food, and a love of life that will be long remembered by all who ever met him. He will be greatly missed and loved forever. Funeral Services will be held at Mt. Olivet Cemetery, 270 Los Ranchitos Road, San Rafael on Monday, May 11th at 1:00 PM.
