Obituary Condolences

Nancy Rogers Age 85, of Belvedere passed away Sunday afternoon, April 24, 2011 from sudden cardiac arrest while she was enjoying one of her greatest loves in life, sailing on San Francisco Bay, following an Easter Sunday brunch with family members. Her first love in life was Harvey Rogers, her husband of over 55 years. Nancy, a third generation Californian, was born in 1925 in San Francisco to Jules and Alma Bernheim. Nancy grew up in San Francisco but spent her summers in Belvedere at her parent's summer home, which led to her long love of sailing. Nancy married Harvey in 1955. And in 1958 they built a house on the Belvedere Lagoon where they lovingly raised their sons Ken and Steve. Nancy graduated from Mills College with a bachelor's degree and earned a teaching credential from UC Berkeley and subsequently taught elementary school in San Francisco. She was active in many charitable organizations including the Marin Community Foundation, the Marin General Hospital Raccoons volunteer group, various boating programs in which she taught sailing to children and young adults, and the Belvedere-Tiburon Recreation Department with which she was an active board member for over 25 years. In 2006 Harvey and Nancy were named Belvedere Citizens Emeriti of the Year. She found her love of sailing early in life at her father's hands showing her the ropes. In 1948 Nancy became one of the first women members of the San Francisco Yacht Club. She remained continuously a member of the club for over 60 years during which time she was active in the Club's racing program which is evidenced by her numerous trophies. Nancy also raced in greater bay and PHRF sailing events including over 40 years racing the Vallejo Race winning many pennants. In 1984 she was voted San Francisco Yacht Club "Yachtswoman of the Year." Ever full of life and spirit, Nancy was an avid tennis player, skier, traveler, bridge player and cook throughout her life. She enjoyed the arts and literature. Nancy was quick to share her good-heartedness, her generosity, a good laugh and a good sense of humor. She will be fondly remembered, missed and loved by her family and a wide circle of friends.
