Obituary Condolences

John J. McCarthy Died on October 31, 2012 at Marin General Hospital after a brief illness. His wife Olivia, son Bruce and daughter Vivian were at his bedside. John was born in San Francisco to Gladys and Vincent William McCarthy on November 27, 1927. His parents as well as his brothers Spencer, Eugene, Russell and Vincent preceded him in death. The McCarthy boys grew up in Marin County and raised their families there. John's nieces and nephews Cathy McCarthy Krieg, Deborah McCarthy Overlid, Erin McCarthy Alexander, Brian McCarthy, Christina Bottarini Reavis, Cathy Bottarini, Judy Martinez, and Bill Martinez were the next generation of his extended family and knew they could always depend on Uncle Johnny. Following his brothers, John joined the Merchant Marine before completing high school. He subsequently spent a brief stint in the army and soon joined the Navy as an ensign during the Korean War. Prior to entering military service, John met and married the love of his life Olivia Bottarini. They were married for 61 years and had two children, Bruce McCarthy and Vivian McCarthy Walker. The two made their home in Marin County and lived in their Corte Madera home for 57 years. John completed his active tour of duty with the Navy and came ashore to pursue his education. He completed his high school and general education through College of Marin and received his bachelor's degree in history and his teaching credential from San Francisco State College. John went on to teach government and history at Neil Cummins School in Corte Madera. His passion for teaching and for the importance of knowledge of civics and history drove his career. He was committed to his students and their success and maintained contact with many of his students for years after their graduation. The Navy continued to be important to John and he spent 30 years in the Naval Reserve where he was an expert in the Naval Control of Shipping and eventually retired as a captain. He inspired countless colleagues both, American and foreign, with his energy, determination and expertise. John's delight was his grandchildren Maya Walker, Hana Walker Bowman and her husband Steven, Logan McCarthy, Aliya McCarthy and Lynae McCarthy as well as his grandnieces and grandnephews Brett Overlid, Nathaniel Overlid and his wife Jackie, Kendra Overlid, Carley Overlid, Kelley Alexander Brege and her husband Jonathan, Matthew Alexander, Molly McCarthy, Kirsten McCarthy, Spencer McCarthy, Vincent McCarthy, Renne Bottarini and Jennifer Bottarini. He was always ready to attend their sporting events, watch a recital, take a trip or help with a problem. Politics were an abiding interest as were history and government and he remained a voracious reader all of his life. He and Olivia also were avid travelers making numerous trips to Europe and South America and making their last trip to South Africa in February of 2012. Please join us for a celebration of John's life on Sunday, November 11th at 11:00 AM at Deer Park Villa in Fairfax. In lieu of flowers Olivia asks that contributions be sent to The Children's Village of Sonoma County, 1321 Lia Lana, Santa Rosa, CA 95404 or to the .
