Obituary Condolences

Doris Lechner "The Angel of the Hill" Doris of San Rafael was a woman of strength and courage, a mother with infinite patience and kindness and a true friend. She died November 10th at her home at the age of 93 surrounded by family and friends. Doris Lechner was raised in San Francisco, the daughter of Otto R. Schrader and Edna I. Schrader and the sister of Otto, Edith and Ralph. After graduating in 1940 from the Haas School of Business at U.C. Berkeley, she employed her accounting skills to do the payroll at the successful family business, Schrader Iron Works. She followed her adventuresome spirit across the country, running a Navajo trading post in Grand Junction, Colorado. Later she joined her younger brother, Ralph, as they sought to cross the Pacific from Honolulu to San Francisco in a 34 foot sailboat. Caught in the tail end of a hurricane, the sailboat was disabled and they were becalmed at sea for 50 days. After this near death experience, Doris soon married Marvin E. Lechner of Parker, South Dakota and settled in San Rafael to devote herself to raising a family. She assisted her husband for 42 years as he ran a home based wholesale distributing company of plumbing and sheet metal tools and supplies. Doris never lost her spirit of adventure as she would explore the far expanses of the globe or the natural beauty of her own country in the company of her husband, relatives or in later years with a close woman friend. She was very committed to her friends and for over 60 years met at least monthly with "the Club", a group of 12 high school woman friends. In addition, her dedication to church and civic organizations was unwavering. Doris was a masterful Bridge player, an avid reader and a wise financial manager of family investments. Though quiet and private in social arenas, her family and close friends knew well the depth of her compassion and intelligence. Doris Lechner is survived by her two sons, Wayne Lechner and John Lechner of San Rafael. Her son William died in 1999 and her son Carl in 1953. She is also survived by her grandchildren, William Lechner, Katherine Lechner and Kevin Lechner and her great grandchild Ryan Lechner. Memorial services will be held Saturday, December 1st, 4:00PM at the Unitarian Universalist Congregation of Marin, 240 Channing Way in San Rafael.
