Obituary Condolences

Patrick C. Hughes March 20, 1953 - January 5, 2013 Patrick (Pat) Hughes was born March 20, 1953 in Salem, Oregon. He died on January 5, 2013 of complications following an apparent heart attack. Pat graduated from South Salem High School in 1971. He attended Oregon State University and graduated in 1975 with a degree in chemical engineering. Pat married his college sweetheart, Suzanne, in September of 1975, and the following year received his Masters degree from Oregon State. After graduation, Pat and Suzie moved to the Bay Area, where Pat took a job with Chevron where he had a long and illustrious career. Pat's loyalty spoke for itself. He worked for Chevron for 36 years and was planning to retire in Bend, Oregon in 2014. Those he worked with considered his knowledge and expertise invaluable assets, and he was loved and well respected within the company and by others throughout the industry. Pat volunteered his time within many circles of the community. He taught Sunday school at St. Paul's Episcopal Church in San Rafael for years. An enthusiastic supporter of his two sons' sports activities, Pat acted as a coach for their baseball, football and wrestling teams. It is believed, though not confirmed, that Pat has thrown at least 2 million batting practice pitches to his sons' Twin Cities baseball teammates and is considered by many to be the greatest batting practice pitcher of all time. Pat was a consummate outdoorsman who loved to spend his weekends hiking around his home in the hills of west Marin. He often toured California and Oregon alongside his friends and family on backpacking and river rafting trips, and it was here where he had some of his happiest times. Pat was a family man who lived a selfless life, constantly striving to ensure that those around him lived in comfort and happiness. Pat was a calm, easygoing man regardless of the situation, which enabled him to assume the role of a silent leader who led by example. He was incredibly intelligent and was first to dive head first into any problem that needed to be solved. Pat enjoyed spending quiet time reading on weekends, but when he was around family and friends, his wit and sense of humor created a foundation of love and laughter for all of those around him. Pat is survived by his mother June, wife Suzie, brothers Kelly and Tim, sisters Maureen and Peggy, and sons Tim and Brian. Pat's first grandchild is expected in June. There will be a gathering to remember Pat on Saturday, January 19 at Serenity at Larkspur. The Pat Hughes Memorial Fund has been established in Pat's honor to benefit trail and land maintenance and preservation in the central Oregon region.
