Annemarie Strandgaard On 6/18/2013, unexpectedly, having recently celebrated her 75th birthday. Born in East Prussia (Germany) to Ewald and Frieda Bartschat. Annemarie graduated from the Women's University in Lubeck, Germany with a degree in nutrition. She came to California in 1958, originally as an au pair, and not intending to stay. She met her future husband, Jesper Strandgaard, in a folk dancing group. After their marriage in 1962, the two made their home in Mill Valley where they raised their two children and lived out their lives as active members of the community. Annemarie had a career in human resources, but what defined her was her particular energy and passion for life. She was an avid gardener, a seamstress, a fantastic cook and an amazing baker. Annemarie loved to dance and she loved the outdoors hiking, swimming, cross country skiing or just being. Although in recent years she was unable to keep up with all of her activities due to the after effects of transverse myelitis, her enthusiasm never waned. More recently she enjoyed the opera, theater and ballet. She appreciated what many would take for granted, and no one could ever say that she didn't take the time to stop and smell the roses. Her heart was generous and kind, and she touched many. She was a great Mother and "Grandmarie" and she will be sorely missed by family and friends alike. Annemarie was preceded in death by her husband, Jesper, in 2001, and leaves her sister, Hildegard Timme of Ratzeburg, Germany, her son Hans and daughter-in-law Chris Strandgaard of Davis, her daughter Bo and son-in-law Dave Thordarson of Los Angeles, as well as her nine grandchildren and three nieces.
