Herbert Earnest Wetherow Obituary
Herbert Earnest Wetherow April 15, 1911 February 8, 2014 Herbert Wetherow passed away peacefully at home. His proudest legacy is his four children, seven grandchildren and nine great grandchildren. Herb is predeceased by his wife, Ann, and son, Stephen. After his wife died, Herb and Thelma Palmquist became companions until she died at age 101. He is survived by his sister, Betty Lou Miller of Pennsylvania and by four loving children, David Wetherow (Faye) living in British Columbia, Renee Wahler (Dave) living in Vermont, and Bill Wetherow and Ruth Wetherow, both living in San Rafael. Herb was born and raised in Peru, Indiana, until the age of ten, when his family moved to Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. He moved around frequently over the next 30 years, than spent 30 years in Colorado, and enjoyed the past 30 years in Marin County, 27 of which were residing at Rotary Manor, in San Rafael. After graduating high school, he learned the craft of sign painting. He furthered his art skill by attending the Pittsburgh School of Art. This led him into a career in retail, creating window displays and eventually managing women's clothing stores, such as Lerner's shops. In this business, he was frequently transferred, living in about ten different states in the East, the Midwest, and the South. Finally, he joined his wife as co-owner of a successful family run fabric and yarn shop in Colorado. He enjoyed spending time with many dear friends: as a member of a Denver Mensa group, playing team bocce in San Rafael and being part of the men's golf club at McGuinnes Golf Course. At Rotary Manor. Herb started a gourmet dinner group, he called bingo, and enjoyed weekly poker and bridge games. Herb loved to travel, enjoying numerous trips with his wife or children to Italy, Hawaii, Mexico, Canada and all over the U.S. He had a true gift for telling jokes, leaving his friends 'rolling on the floor' laughing. He loved a challenge! He applied his artistic talent by painting in oil and water color paints. But much of his creativity was expressed in repairing and creating things from scratch. One example was his passion for Halloween. He turned out an incredible series of unique handcrafted costumes, including a great Centurion costume which he made the year he became a centenarian. Herb's positive attitude, being totally engaged in life, and the loving care and support of his children over the years certainly contributed to his longevity, as well as the support of many excellent medical practitioners in Marin County. He will be remembered and missed by many family and friends. A celebration of his life will be held at Rotary Manor, 1821 5th Avenue, San Rafael on Sunday, February 16, at 2:00 pm
