Mario Castagnola Passed away peacefully on March 1, 2014 at the age of 92. Born July 15th, 1921 in San Francisco to Domenico and Silvia Ghio Castagnola. He was predeceased by his loving wife of 57 years, Teresa Castagnola. Also, preceded in death by his parents and brothers Dominic Castagnola Jr., Manuel Castagnola, sisters Esther Castagnola and Dina (Dolly) Gelardi. Mario is survived by his loving children, daughter Penny Baker (Russell) and son Phil Castagnola (Debbie). He will be missed dearly by his grandchildren Erik Rhoades, Gina Castagnola and Daniel Castagnola. Also survived by sister-in-law Hannah Basuino. Loving uncle of Donald (Molly) Castagnola, David Castagnola, George (Kate) Castagnola, Ronald (Janette) Britz, Michael (Deanna) Britz, Marc (Li) Basuino and Carol (Ralph) Homan. He also leaves behind numerous great nieces and nephews. Mario was a native San Franciscan and graduated from Galileo HS in 1938 where he was a standout diver. If not for a minor injury he would have been the city diving champion. He also enjoyed playing basketball and baseball for the Salesian Boys club. He shared memories of his teams being able to play at San Quentin and on Alcatraz. He was an avid sports fan and enjoyed the Giants and 49ers (when they were winning). A Veteran of WWII, Mario entered the Marine Corps September 1942 and served until December 1945. His tour of duty included action in Bougainville, Guam, Iwo Jima and other islands in the Pacific. He was honorably discharged with a rank of Sergeant. Mario spent most of his career as a supply specialist for the US Navy at the Hunter's Point Naval Shipyard, the Oakland Navy Base and the Naval Station on Treasure Island. A proud Italian, Mario was a long time board member of both the Italian Cemetery and the Societa Italiana Di Mutua Beneficenza. His family was his most cherished possession.
