Richard Joseph "Dick" Bettencourt Obituary
Richard Joseph "Dick" Bettencourt June 26, 1943 - Mar. 5, 2014 A former Sausalito fire fighter, he passed away on March 5, 2014 at age 70. He grew up on a dairy ranch in Tennessee Valley, CA, and joined the U.S. Navy in 1961. He received an Associate in Science degree from College of Marin and became a fire fighter and EMT. He was a fire fighter with the City of Sausalito from 1968-1978 and was an Acting Battalion Chief from 1975-1978. Dick was part of the department's rescue squad and rappelled down cliffs to save stranded hikers who had fallen down the steep cliffs in the Marin headands. In 1978 he moved to Fruitvale, ID with the love of his life, Jill Marlene Baucom, where they married. Together, they hand-built a log cabin on the 40-acres they had purchased. Dick was in charge of the fire suppression pumper crew for the U.S. Forest Service, was the Public Works Superintendent for the City of Council, ID, and was the Fire Chief of the Council Fire Department. He started the Idaho Rural Water Association, a non-profit that continues today to provide support and technical assistance to Idaho towns without water and waste water programs. When he retired, Dick and Jill moved to the Oregon Coast. Dick's passions were his family, golfing, hunting, fishing, and the 49ers. He made the best ribs and enchiladas in the world and loved classic rock. He was preceded in death by his parents, Russell Joseph Bettencourt and Geraldine Brown, and sister Sue Bettencourt Giacomino Paradis. Dick is survived by his wife, Jill Marlene Baucom Bettencourt, and his children and their families who loved him tremendously, Peter David Baucom (Kelly), Stephanie Baucom Keys (Gary), Lyle Froyd (Amy), his best friend, Rob Cameron (Linda) and Aunt Vida Legge. He is survived by sons Richard and David Bettencourt, sister Arlene Knudsen (Connie), and brother Mike Bettencourt (Vicki). Per Dick's wishes, there will not be a memorial service at this time.
