Harry Martin Hanks Obituary
Harry Martin Hanks Harry Hanks of Novato, a deeply devoted family man and career information technology specialist, departed from his Earthly life on May 22, 2016. A celebration of his life will be held at 1:30 p.m. Sunday, June 12, at the Presbyterian Church of Novato. Harry was born on May 13, 1942 in Bell, California, and spent his childhood in nearby Downey. Nicknamed "Buster," he played with his dog Togo, became a Boy Scout in Troop 423, enjoyed surfing, took trips to Catalina Island and participated in the Esquires Car Club. He graduated from Earl Warren High School in Downey and Long Beach State University. Harry started his career with Rockwell International. He then moved to the Bay Area and worked for Foremost McKesson, I. Magnin, The Pasha Group, and IBM. Harry finished his career as an IT consultant for large corporations, including IBM and the Mayo Clinic. Harry and his wife, Ursula first ran into each other in 1979. After waiting in a long line at a gas station, Harry pulled his car out and accidentally hit Ursula as she was riding her bicycle to work. Ursula's leg was broken and Harry's car bumper dented, but their eyes met and they "sparkled." What followed was a true love affair. The couple married on Valentine's Day 1982 and lovingly brought their children together to form one big, happy family. They were joyfully married for 34 years. Harry loved travel, especially trips to Germany, Hawaii, Tahiti, Alaska, Yosemite and the family cabin at Lake Tahoe. He enjoyed skiing, running and music. In addition to Ursula, Harry leaves behind his sister Roberta Rozelle, his son Kevin Hanks (Renee), daughters Tammie Hanks, Debbie Hanks, Liz Chiang (Doug) and Elise Smith. He and Ursula had 12 grandchildren and five great grandchildren. Harry was preceded in death by his parents, Martin and Louise Hanks, and his mother-in-law and father-in-law, Willi and Hilde Rehbein. In lieu of flowers the family asks that donations be made to the Marin Humane Society in Harry's name.
