Michael Bruce Cassidy
United States Postal Inspector
October 19, 1948~May 22, 2004
A BS degree in Marine Biology at Old Dominion somehow led Michael "Mike" Cassidy to a law enforcement career, first as an undercover narcotics officer in Norfolk, VA, then to a 30 year career as a federal agent -- an Inspector with the U.S. Postal Inspection Service, the nation's oldest federal law enforcement agency. He died in San Rafael, CA May 22, 2004 of apparent heart failure while driving home from the gym to which he had belonged for 20 years. Michael was considered one of his agency's best investigators and most competent team leaders. Since February he had been managing Inspection Service teams in both Hawaii and San Francisco and was scheduled to resume full time duties in San Francisco in mid July. Highly skilled in all facets of investigation and well respected by those in his agency and others, "Mike" was particularly talented as an interrogator and had one of the best arrest and conviction records in agency history. He excelled at every assignment he was given, always exceeding in unprecedented fashion the goals set for him. He was particularly effective in Workers Compensation cases, saving the government tens of millions of dollars by identifying and bringing to successful prosecution those who filed false claims.
Cassidy traveled regularly between California and Hawaii and arrived home May 18 with his wife Carole, a retired postal inspector. He planned to return to his Hawaii assignment May 26 after the couple's 29th wedding anniversary May 24th. The two met in Bethesda, MD in 1974 while training as agents and married the following year. They lived in Glen Cove, NY for several years and worked separate assignments throughout New York City's five boroughs and on Long Island. They transferred to Northern California in 1984 where they have resided since. Carole left the service for a time to work on her Ph.D. at Stanford while Michael moved on to new assignments, working cases in Northern California, Hawaii and Guam.
Michael was born in Teaneck, NJ and attended Teaneck High. He is survived by his wife, Carole Abrew Cassidy, his mother Anne Rue and sister Pamela Porter in Arizona, brother Thomas in New Jersey, two nieces and three nephews.
Services will be held at Marin Lutheran Church, 649 Meadowsweet Drive, Corte Madera, CA 94925, June 1 at 11 a.m. Visitation will be at Keaton's Mortuary, Saturday and Sunday, May 29th and 30th from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. In lieu of flowers, donations to Marin County Emergency Services, BrightHaven.org, the World Wildlife Federation or the Jane Goodall Institute would be appreciated.
