WALDO: Claribel Darlene Kern, age 85, of Waldo, Ohio, departed life, surrounded by her family, on Tuesday, January 8, 2013.

She was born on January 23, 1927 the daughter of the late Manus and Ethel Shafer in Columbus, Ohio.

She was the beloved wife of George R. Kern Sr.; loving mother of Mary Gross, Connie Kern, George R. (Kim) Kern Jr., and Benjamin D. Kern; cherished grandmother of Mary (Mike) Tripp, Norman (Katie) Gross, Brandyn Kern, Bryant Kern, Chelsey Kern, and George R. Kern III; proud great-grandmother of Geordi Hall and Jay Tripp; great-great grandmother of two.

She was preceded in death by her parents, her sister Eileen (Charles) Mayfield, and her brothers George David Shafer and John (Arlene) Shafer.

Darlene left school during World War 2 to work in a factory to help with the war effort but she was proud to later obtaining her GED and Real Estate license. She was a very active member of Peace Community United Church of Christ in Waldo, Ohio. She loved to travel and was blessed to be able to visit Hawaii, Ireland, and Great Britain. Even though she is not physically with us now, she will always be in our hearts.

The family will receive friends today (Friday January 11th) from 5 - 8 pm at the Bennett-Brown-Rodman & Snyder Funeral Home, 307 E. High St., Ashley, Ohio and where funeral services will be held on Saturday January 12th at 11:00 am with Pastor Joel Fetter officiating. Burial will follow in Ashley Union Cemetery.
