MARION: Lois Jean Phelps, age 84, of Marion passed away on Monday, May 20, 2013, at 2:45 a.m. in the Kingston Residence of Marion.

She was born in Union County on May 20, 1929 to Ernest B. and Bonna (Allinder) Allen. She graduated from the New Bloomington High School in 1947. On September 26, 1952 Lois married Waldron D. Phelps in Marion and he preceded her in death on December 18, 1987.

She was a member of the Ladies Auxillary of VFW Post 7201, a volunteer with the Marion Area Counciling Center, and the Marion General Hospital Hospice Program. Lois was employed for 14 years as a clerk for Nichol's Bakery and following her retirement she formed Understanding Friends in August of 1988.

The lifelong Marion resident is survived by five daughters; Carolyn (Rick) Walters of Marion, Jeannie (Jack) Suter of Redding, Ca., Margaret (Bob) Smith of Waldo, Oh., Sandra Akers of New Bloomington, Oh., and Betty Mowery of Fl.; one sister; Ruth (Dr. Paul) Lyon of Traverse City, Mi.; a daughter-in-law; Pam Phelps; 11 grandchildren, and 20 great-grandchildren. Lois was preceded in death along with her parents and husband by a son; Larry Phelps; a daughter; Mariam Gallagher; a brother; Ernest Allen Jr.; and one grandchild.

Friends may call at the Boyd-Born Funeral Home on Thursday, May 23rd, 2013, from 5-8 p.m. Pastor Wynand DeWet will conduct the funeral service in the funeral home on Friday at 10:30 a.m. with burial to follow in Chapel Heights Memory Gardens.
