MARSHALL — Services for Velma L. Washington, of Marshall, will be 11 a.m. Saturday, July 30, 2011, at the Julius S. Scott Sr. Chapel, Wiley College. Interment will be in Liberty Cemetery. Arrangements are by Peoples Funeral Home. Ms. Washington departed this life July 25, 2011, peacefully, at home.
She was born January 14, 1942, to Eddie Washington and Viola Chesley Washington, deceased.
She was preceded in death by her parents; and three brothers, Leroy Washington, Eddie Washington Jr. and Roosevelt Washington.
She was a 1960 graduate of H.B. Pemberton High School. Furthering her education, she attended Wiley College, and in 1965, she received her Bachelor of Arts degree in elementary education. Velma taught for 40 years, retiring from the Unified School System in Los Angeles, California. She relocated back to Marshall because of her love for family, friends and fishing.
She was a member of the NAACP, Pilgrim Progressive Lodge, H.B. Pemberton Reunion Committee, a life member of Wiley College Alumni Association and a member of Woman Worshipping God Through Music Choir.
She is survived by one brother, Willie G. Washington (Annie) of Los Angeles, California; three nephews, Dennis Washington (Norvella) of Houston, Texas, Antonio Washington (Brenda) of Dallas, Texas, and Eddie Washington of Aiea Hawaii; four nieces, Theressa Washington of Dallas, Texas, Grace Stoker (Ed) of Marshall, Texas, Willa Washington of Compton, California, and Jewel Washington of Los Angeles, California; one uncle, Roscoe Chesley Sr. of Manhattan, New York; one sister-in-law, Della Washington of Marshall; cousins, Lucille Clark of Houston, Texas, Roscoe Chesley Jr. of St. Louis, Missouri, and Carol Ann Williams and Brenda Turner, both of Los Angeles, California.
Visitation will be 7-8 p.m. today, July 29, 2011, at Peoples Funeral Home Chapel.
