James H. Schmitt, 87 of Marshfield died peacefully on Wednesday, March 20, 2013 at his home with his family by him. He was under the care of Ministry Home Hospice Care.

Mass of Christian Burial will be 11:30am Monday, March 25, 2013 at Our Lady of Peace Catholic Church with Fr. Eric Berns officiating. Burial will be in Gate of Heaven Cemetery, Marshfield with his grandchildren serving as pallbearers.

Visitations will be from 4-8pm on Sunday at the Rembs Funeral Home and again on Monday at the church from 10:30am until service time.

Jim was born on October 1, 1925 in Marshfield to John "Huntz" and Nora (Herman) Schmitt.

He was united in marriage to Shirley M. Christensen on September 21, 1946 at St. John's Catholic Church in Marshfield, while on leave from the Army. He served from June 1946 until his honorable discharge in May 1947.

Jim worked at the Marshfield Milling Company, Swift Meats and drove truck after he returned home from service. In 1957, he started at Felker Brothers and retired as a fabricator in 1988. While working at Felkers, he taught welding at Mid-State Vocational School in Marshfield.

He was an avid gardener, thrifty collector of all before "Green" was invented, and was the best welder around. He could weld anything from the crack of dawn to a broken heart.

Jim is survived by his wife Shirley, children Rodney (Rita) Schmitt of Green Bay, Anthony (Brenda) Schmitt of Marshfield, Janet Schmitt of Marshfield, James P. (Shirley) Schmitt of Chili, Gordon Schmitt of Marshfield, Dale Schmitt of Marshfield and Cindee Charron of Marshfield;2 16 grandchildren and 14 great grandchildren.

He is further survived by one sister Betty Fassler and two sisters-in-law Margaret Schmitt and Leone Rondorf all of Marshfield.

Besides his parents, he was preceded in death by his daughter Eva Marie Schmitt, son Jeffrey Schmitt, two brothers, Robert and Donald Schmitt; four sisters, Fidelia Atwood, Carol Koenig, Ellen Greenwood and Germaine Christensen.
