Sister Mercita Weis, Franciscan Sister of Perpetual Adoration, 90, died Thursday, November 15, 2012, at Villa St. Joseph, La Crosse. Sister was in her sixty-ninth year of profession.

Sister Mercita was born to Eugene and Mary (Wilhelm) Weis on January 3, 1922, in Rozellville, Wisconsin. She entered St. Rose Convent in 1937, and made profession of vows in 1943. After earning degrees in education, Sister Mercita served as a teacher in parochial schools in Iowa and Wisconsin for 34 years. She ministered as the principal at St. Mary's School, La Crosse for nine years and St. Anthony's, Loyal for five years. She was also Director of Religious Education (DRE) many of her years in Loyal. Sister Mercita continued as DRE in Watertown, South Dakota, Ramona, South Dakota and Madison. From 1990-1996 she lived in Las Vegas and where she worked with Catholic Charities' Senior Nutrition Program. In 1994, a former student of Sister Mercita's, James Hartman, funded the building of the "Sister Mercita Weis Senior Center" in Las Vegas. Sister Mercita visited and did volunteer work for the elderly at Monsignor Shallow Apartments in Las Vegas and St. Joseph Cathedral in La Crosse for the next several years before retiring to St. Rose Convent in 2002. She moved to Villa St. Joseph in March 2012 when her health began to fail.

She is survived by her Franciscan community, her brothers, Harold (Leona) Weis, Fargo, North Dakota; Norbert Weis, Omaha, Nebraska; Don (Betty) Weis, Port Edwards; and Clem Weis, Marshfield; and her sisters, Dorothy (Clarence) Hamus, Junction City; Marie (Franklin) Walter, Loyal; and Virginia Schneider, Marshfield; and nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents and her brother, Melvin.

Friends called after 3:15 p.m., on Monday, November 19, at St. Rose Convent. A prayer service was held at 6:30 p.m. in Mary of the Angels Chapel that evening. The Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 10 a.m. on Tuesday, November 20, in the chapel. Burial will be in Gate of Heaven Cemetery, La Crosse.
