Dr. Steven M. Fontanini, age 62, died peacefully on Saturday, April 20, 2013, surrounded by his loving family after a valiant battle with esophageal/stomach cancer. Dr. Fontanini was born on Easter morning, March 25, 1951, in Des Moines, Iowa, to Joseph and Virginia Fontanini. He was the third of four sons. He grew up in Boone, Iowa where he attended grade school, junior high and graduated from Boone High School in 1969. He was president of his senior class, senior prom king, and captain of his high school baseball team. He then attended Boone Junior College in his home town where he earned athletic and academic scholarships. He then attended Drake University in Des Moines, Iowa, where he again earned athletic and academic scholarships and served as captain of his baseball team.
Following undergraduate school, he taught junior high school, 9th grade science, 8th grade math and coached girls 8th grade basketball for one year in Washington, Iowa, he was accepted to the College of Osteopathic Medicine & Surgery in Des Moines, Iowa, in 1975. After completing medical school, he served a one year D.O. internship at Richmond Heights Hospital in Richmond Heights, Ohio.
He then returned to the University of Iowa in Iowa City, Iowa, where he completed the first year of an anesthesia residency in 1979. He enjoyed many different rotations, but switched to the family practice residency at the University of Iowa which he completed in 1981.
He then moved to Marshfield, Wisconsin where he practiced in the Dept. of Family Practice at the Marshfield Clinic until January, 2009. He then accepted a position with Ministry Health in Weston, Wisconsin, where he practiced from February, 2009, until he became ill and had to stop working in July, 2012.
He is lovingly survived by his wife of 35 years, Carol, of Marshfield, six children: Eugene W. Baker (Terri) of Collierville, Tennessee, Paul Baker (Jennifer) of Mason, Ohio, Patrick Baker (Jennifer) of Mason, Ohio, Gregory Scott Baker (Tom Ward) of Columbus, Ohio: Steven Dante Fontanini of Denver, Colorado and Angela Maria Fontanini of San Diego, California; and eight grandchildren, Kyle, Kaleb, Khloe, Taylor, Morgan, McKayla, Hayden and Brayden. He leaves three brothers, Dennis (Sheryl) Ellenwood of Newland, North Carolina, Joseph (Laurie)Fontanini of St. Charles, Missouri, Richard (Marchelle) Fontanini of Boone, Iowa, and his mother, Virginia Fontanini, of Boone, Iowa, his special friend, Laura Bertram Kibbel and many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his father, Joseph Fontanini.
They family will greet relatives and friends starting at 5pm Friday, April 26, 2013 at Our Lady of Peace Catholic Church, 1414 West 5th Street Marshfield, WI followed by a Celebration of Life at 6:30pm at which time family friends and patients may share their memories of Dr. Fontanini.
Mass of Christian Burial will be held 10 am Saturday, April 27, 2013 at Our Lady of Peace Catholic Church with Fr. Eric Berns Officiating.
Visitations will be from 9am on Saturday until time of services at Our Lady of Peace Catholic Church.
