Gilbert Leick Obituary

Gilbert P. Leick, 86, Stratford, died on Tuesday, September 22, 2015 surrounded by his loving family at Ministry St. Joseph's Hospital, Marshfield.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 10:30 am on Saturday, September 26, 2015 at St. Joseph's Catholic Church, Stratford. Burial will take place in St. Joseph's Cemetery in the Town of Eau Pleine, Marathon County and serving as pallbearers will be Justin Leick, Jason Tomlinson, Brooke Maguire, Austin Schneider, Luke Radke and Brian Radke. The visitation will be held from 4:00 pm until 8:00 pm on Friday at Sauter / Rembs Funeral Home, Stratford and on Saturday from 9:30 am until service time at St. Joseph's Catholic Church.

Gilbert was born on July 10, 1929 on the family farm in the Town of Day to Lawrence and Cecelia (Wilhelm) Leick. He attended St. Joseph's Parochial School, Stratford, and was a 1948 graduate of Stratford High School. Gilbert lived his entire life on the farm where he was born. He took over the family farm from his father and farmed there until his retirement in 1998 when his sons Chris and Steve assumed the operation. He continued to do field work and feed calves.

He married Irene R. Brandt on August 29, 1951 at Our Lady of Peace Catholic Church. She died on July 3, 1998. He was blessed to find a second love and married Frances L. Frodl Radke on August 11, 2000.

As the years went on and he was no longer able to physically do work on the farm, he and Frances spent hours on the gator looking at the calves, cows, watching the filling and packing of bunker silos and time amongst his trees watching deer and feeding the birds from his hands or off the top of his hat.

Gilbert was a lifelong member of St. Joseph's Catholic Church, The Catholic Order of Foresters, served on the Stratford School Board from 1974 until 1998, and served on the Stratford Co-op Board. His hobbies included hunting, fishing, planting and providing Christmas trees to his family, friends and church, feeding birds, making wood, mowing lawn, the card club, throwing darts, attending family functions, sports and watching his sons play ball.

He is survived by his wife, Frances and children, Deb (Joel) Tomlinson, Steve (Joannie) Leick , Greg (Mary) Leick, all of Stratford, Kevin (Kathy) Leick of Marshfield, Karen (Meldon) Maguire of Mosinee, Chris (Mary Jo) Leick of Stratford, Mark Radke of Stratford, Michael Radke of Fredrick, and Craig Radke and Brian Radke, both of Stratford. He is also survived by grandchildren, Jason (Laura) Tomlinson, Janelle (Matt) Richard, Jeremy (Sarah) Tomlinson, Justin Leick, Candice (Brad) Surcey, Adam Leick, April (Jeremy) Bores, Brooke, Skye and Fawne Maguire, Austin and Taylre Schneider, and Emma, Luke and Michael Radke and by great grandchildren, Jett and Jax Richard, Haden, Zoey and Bently Tomlinson, Walker Surcey, and Arianna and Archer Bores. He is further survived by sisters, Cecelia "Sis" (Roy) Gump, Kathryn "Kitty" (Marvin) Weber, Bernadette Hardinger, brothers-in-law and sisters-in-law, Floyd Heinze, Robert Leonhardt, Dan Brandt, Marian Brandt, Don (Charlotte) Frodl, Dorothy Manney, Phyllis Frodl, Rosemary (Rich) Haigh, Gerrie Brandt and Jerry (Nancy) Frodl.

He was predeceased by his parents, his first wife, Irene, sisters, Carol Leonardt and Marie Heinze and brothers-in-law, Greg Manney, Roman (Margaret) Brandt, Chuck (Marie) Brandt, Linus Brandt, Leander (Agnes) Brandt, Jerome Brandt, and Clarence Brandt, and sisters-in-law, Frances (Merle) Craft, Eleanor (Lyman) Tremmeling, Inez (Lloyd) Kenyon and Florence (Melvin) Wilke.

To The Leick Family,
Gilbert was a top notch guy and citizen of the Stratford area. It was a privilege to serve as the Superintendent of Schools during part of his tenure on the Board. He was wise, thoughtful, and dedicated to making the Stratford Schools a great place to educate all of the chidren of Stratford. He was a great influence on my career as a new Superintendent at the time. Truely a great man!!!
