Irene was born on August 1, 1929 in Hewitt, the daughter of Michael and Sophie (Pankratz) Hartl.

She was united in marriage to Lester H. Wunrow on August 17, 1946 and they were happily married for 62 years. Lester died on November 13, 2008.

Irene attended Hillside School, Auburndale, and St. Joseph's Parochial School, Hewitt through the 8th grade and then attained her GED in 1976. One of her fondest memories while growing up was of helping her dad with chores on the farm. After her marriage she had worked various jobs outside of the home, including Weyerhaeuser Door Company, St. Joseph's Hospital and Bethel and Marshfield Convalescent Centers. She especially enjoyed the medical field, working as a nurse's aide and then later as a home health care provider eventually opening her home to caring for the elderly. She took great pride in farming with her husband, Lester. She worked hard on and off the farm to help provide for her family.

She enjoyed many crafts: knitting, crocheting, doll making and cake decorating. She was a 4H leader, teaching leather craft for several years. She was an excellent seamstress even designing and making wedding dresses. She sewed clothing for her family as well.

Irene was proud of her German heritage researching her family lineage to relatives living in Furth im Wald. She visited and maintained correspondence with them through the years. Family gatherings, whether at home or at "the shack in the woods", were very special to her. Her children and grandchildren were the light of her life. She had a love of horses, particularly draft horses and truly loved horse shows and trail rides. We will miss her sweet disposition, her loving acceptance, her hugs and kisses and the best apple pies ever.

She was a lifelong member of St. Michael's Catholic Church, Hewitt, where she served as religion teacher and was a member of the choir for many years. She was a big part of their fall fundraiser making hundreds of potato dumplings which added to the success of the dinner. She was also a member of the Parish Council of Catholic Women and a lifetime member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars Auxiliary, Marshfield.

Irene is survived by her children, Karleen (Jim) Masephol of Phillips, Ken (Caroline) Wunrow of Marshfield, Mary (Arlen) Scheunemann of Pittsville, Jim (Kim) Wunrow of Arpin, Donna (Jay) Stuttgen of Vesper, and John (fiancé - Shelly) Wunrow of Arpin and a daughter-in-law, Linda Wunrow of Marshfield.
