Israel, John L.
John L. "Jack' Israel, 83, of Leesburg, FL went to be with the Lord April 8, 2013. He passed away at home with his loving daughter and his favorite cat at his bedside.
John was born in Cumberland, WI, to George and Annie Israel. He moved to Marshfield in 1951, after a short stint in the army. In 1954, he married Doris "Dorie" Hustedt, his wife of 55 years. After working as a policeman, fireman, and credit manager he started as a teller at Citizens National Bank and Trust. Thirty one years later he retired as vice president and cashier. During that time he attended the Harvard and UW Madison Graduate Schools of Banking. He was active in the American Institute of Banking and in his community in many capacities such as alderman, fire and police commissioner and economics teacher at MATC.
After retiring in 1987, he devoted himself to the Central Wisconsin Fair as Secretary/Manager, though he had been involved with the fair since the '50s. He was elected to the Board of Directors, as president from '83-'87. Fair time was his favorite time of year.
During this time John was also very involved with the Zion United Methodist Church and was a lay speaker.
John and his wife, Dorie, shared a passion of bicycle riding, cats, and traveling in their RV with friends, especially to Door County.
In 2002 they moved to Florida where John became a volunteer Chaplain at Leesburg Regional Hospital, served on the community's finance committee, and participated in S.C.O.R.E. He enjoyed golfing and the beautiful weather but also missed his friends in Marshfield.
He is survived by a daughter, Tina, of Leesburg, and six spoiled cats. A memorial service will be held on June 1st at 11 am at Zion United Methodist Church followed by lunch. Donations may be made in his name to The Cat Protection Society, PO Box 1078, Sorento, FL 32776. Online condolences may be left at www.bankspagetheus.com.
