Schiller, Karl J.

Karl J Schiller, 79, of Pittsville, Wisconsin, passed away suddenly in the emergency room at St. Joseph's Hospital on Saturday evening, March 8, 2014.

Karl was born at home on February 25, 1935 on the family farm to Paul and Louise (Tosch) Schiller. After graduating Pittsville High School in 1953, Karl worked on this same farm with his father and brother, until he eventually took full ownership. He continued to grow the operation with his sons, until his eventual retirement from dairy farming.

With farming in his blood, Karl, and his wife, of 58+ years, Karleen (Knuth), continued to raise corn and soybeans, as well as provide custom fieldwork for numerous farmers in Wood County. Karl also had an interest in machinery, which quickly grew into a tractor restoration hobby. He and his son Marvin took pride in their John Deere A and Co-op E4. Karl and Karleen frequently met with other old tractor enthusiasts from central Wisconsin, where they enjoyed meals, fellowship, and a few tall tales.

Karl was also active in local government. He served as chairman for the town of Hansen for over 40 years. Over the years he held various leadership and membership roles in Wood County's branch of the Wisconsin Towns Association, Crime Stoppers, and the Southwest Wood County Recycling Board. Karl also was an active member in the Pittsville community. A lifelong member of St. John's Lutheran Church, he was active in the men's club, church council, pastoral selection committees, and church office roles. The Wisconsin Farm Bureau, FFA Alumni, Seneca Segal Mutual Insurance Company, and Wood County Farm Supply (now known as Harmony Country Co-op) all benefitted from Karl's leadership and willingness to lend a helping hand. In 1983, with the support of the entire community, Karl and his family served as the host of the inaugural Pittsville FFA Alumni Dairy Breakfast.

Six children, fifteen grandchildren, and fourteen great-grandchildren all benefitted from the love Karl and Karleen shared for them. Karl is survived by his wife Karleen, son Marvin (Jean), daughter Kris (Ron Wolf), daughter Barb (Loren Scheunemann), son Ken (Lisa), daughter Sandi (Bob Atkinson), daughter-in-law, Diane Schiller and their families, and sister MaryJane (Vern Getlinger) of Fitchburg. He was preceded in death by his parents, mother and father in-law, brother Rupert, sister and brother-in-law Phyllis and Ted Christian, brother-in-law and sister-in-law August and Marion Knuth, infant triplet siblings, son Jon, and great-granddaughter Madilynn Martinez.

The family will receive friends on Thursday, March 13, 2014 from 4:00 until 8:00 PM at Buchanan-Rembs Funeral Home, 5253 2nd Avenue, Pittsville, and again on Friday, March 14, 2014 from 10:00 AM until the 11:00 AM services at St. John's Lutheran Church, 8313 2nd Street, Pittsville.

Recipients of memorial donations will be decided by the family at a future date.
