They had 61 loving years until the time of Emil's passing on December 9, 1994. Together they farmed in the Town of Eau Pleine until retiring in 1977 and moved into Junction City. Gladys worked various housekeeping jobs after retirement from the farm. Gladys also volunteered for many church related organizations including Bethesda Resale Shops.

She was a member of St. Paul's Lutheran Church, Junction City. Prior to her illness she was an active member and leader in the Ladies Aide. In her younger years she belonged to the North County Line Homemakers and was a Wood County 4-H leader. She enjoyed baking and was well known for her homemade breads and pies. She also was an avid quilter making quilts for family and friends and the different missions. She enjoyed sharing stories about "the old days" growing up in the lumberjack camp with her parents and family and the hard times they endured.
