Ernest Matson Obituary

Rev Ernest A. Matson, age 83 of Marshfield, died Monday April 2, 2012 at Ministry St Joseph's Hospital. Funeral services will be held 11:00AM Saturday, April 7, 2012 at Zion United Methodist Church, Marshfield. The Rev Michael Carlson will officiate. Jean Roehrborn will serve as soloist. Military honors conducted by the American Legion Post #54 will be held immediately follow the funeral service at Zion United Methodist Church. Burial will be in the Brighton Cemetery, Unity. Visitation will be held from 9:30-11:00AM at the church on Saturday. The Hansen-Schilling Funeral Home is assisting the family with arrangements.

Rev. Matson was born February 25, 1929 in Birchwood Wisconsin, the son of Emil and Marie (Larson) Matson. He graduated from Alma Center High School in 1947. Ernest then attended the University of Wisconsin Eau Claire, where he received his BS in Education. In 1956 Rev. Matson received his Master of Divinity from the Fuller Theological Seminary.

On August 21, 1954, Rev Matson was united in marriage to Faith Mabbott at the Unity Methodist Church.

Rev Matson served in the US Army from 1951-1953. He continued his military career as a Chaplain in the Navy Reserves until he was honorably separated in 1986.

Rev Matson served as pastor of many congregations during his life of Christian service. He was ordained in June of 1959 at the Evangelical Covenant Church, Rockford, IL. Rev Matson then served as Pastor at Bethel Covenant Church, Ellsworth, WI. He also served in many locations with the US Navy as Chaplain. Rev Matson then led churches in Waupaca and Baudette Minnesota.

Rev Matson for a time was caretaker for the Riverside Bible Conference in Amherst, Wisconsin. He also served as a Pastoral Encourager at Oak Hills Bible College in Bemidji, Minnesota.

His passions were his faith, his family and the love of music.

He attended Zion United Methodist Church. Rev Matson was a member of the National Association of Evangelicals and the American Legion, where he served as State Chaplain from 2000-2001.

Rev. Matson is lovingly survived by his wife Faith Matson, Marshfield, a Foster daughter, Barbara (Reed) Wilson, Santa Rosa, CA and a brother David Matson, Madison.

A sister, Beulah and foster son, Wayne preceded Rev Matson in death.

My condolences to Faith and other family members. I remember Ernest from our high school days in Alma Center, and also at the class reunions over the past several years.

I remember Ernest from my high school days in Alma Center, Wisconsin. I was fond of Ernest, David, and Beulah during those wonderful years of our lives. My condolences to those who were closest to Ernest in his later years.
