Mercedes M. Helmke, 91, Stratford, died on Sunday, November 4, 2012 at Ministry St. Joseph's Hospital, Marshfield.
Funeral services will be held at 11:00 am on Saturday, November 10, 2012 at Rembs Funeral Home. Burial will take place in Gate of Heaven Cemetery. The visitation will be held on Friday from 5:00 pm until 7:00 pm and on Saturday from 10:00 am until service time at Rembs Funeral Home, Marshfield.
Mercedes Margaret Weber was born on July 11, 1921 in Marshfield, to Philip and Clara (Weber) Weber. She attended Sacred Heart Parochial School, Purdy Jr. High School, both in Marshfield, and was a graduate of Marshfield Senior High School. She was united in marriage to August L. Helmke on September 17, 1941 at Sacred Heart Rectory, Marshfield. He died on March 8, 1996.
Mercedes and her two oldest children lived with her parents in Marshfield while her husband Augie served in the Navy during World War II. She and Augie then owned and operated a farm in the Township of Eau Pleine, Marathon County, until 1996. One of their major interests was square and round dancing and they served as editors of the Central Wisconsin newsletter "Chit Chat Round the Squares" for 30 years.
Cedie was a member of the Catholic Knights of Wisconsin since 1937, Eau Pleine Homemakers and Birthday Club, and Central Wisconsin Square Dancer's and Caller's Association.
She is survived by 3 sons, Philip A. (Denise) Helmke of Brooklyn, WI, Kenneth M. (Sue) Helmke of Green Bay, and Richard L. Helmke of Plover. She is also survived by 3 granddaughters and 2 grandsons, Cynthia (Jeffrey) Adamick of Green Bay, Catherine (Timothy) Moran of Cary, IL, Cara Helmke of Napa, CA, John Helmke of Plover, and Austin Helmke of Brooklyn, WI. She is further survived by 6 great grandchildren, Caitlin Moran, Ryan Moran, Gwenn Moran, Ian Moran, and twins, Evelyn Moran, and Ashlyn Moran, all of Cary, IL.
She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, a brother Elmer John in infancy in 1914 and a sister, Dolores Marie in 1979.
