Elizabeth (Taylor) Abernethy, former local resident and retired educator, died Oct. 16 in Hazleton. Her death came two years after the onset of her Alzheimers disease and just four days before her 84th birthday. Born in Hellertown, she was a daughter of the late former Northampton County Superintendent of Schools, Robert N. Taylor, and the late Helen (Buck) Taylor. She graduated from Hellertown High School and continued her education at Penn State University
, where she earned both her B.S. and M.S. After graduating, she taught home economics in the Bethlehem School District, where she met her future husband, Richard D. Abernethy, who was also teaching in the same district. The couple settled in the Hazleton area in 1953. Survivors:
Husband of 57 years; daughters, Patricia A. Tomsho and Betsy A. Urzillo, both of Hazleton; son, Richard D. Abernethy of Tampa, Fla.; six grandchildren; sister, Helen Katherine Sabo of Hellertown; brother, Robert N. Taylor of Dunellen, Fla. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her beloved grandparents, Abner and Elizabeth Buck. Services:
