George J. Spillane
George J. Spillane, 98 of Allentown passed away into the arms of the Lord on February 28, 2014. He was the loving husband of the late Ellen L. (Gibbons) for 71 yrs. Born in Lansford PA, he was a son of the late William and Mary (Henehan) Spillane. He was a member of the Cathedral Church of St. Catharine of Siena for 65 yrs. He retired at age 85 yrs. after owning and operating his own business, G.J. Spillane 5 & 10 cent stores in Allentown & Emmaus and Spillanes Variety store in Palmerton, for 52 years. Prior to opening his first store in 1949, he managed F.W. Woolworth stores in Maryland, Washington D.C. and Pennsylvania for 14 years. He had a wonderful sense of humor. He enjoyed fishing and taking his many friends and relatives for airplane rides after obtaining his private pilot license at the age of 45. He was a WWII Navy veteran. The joy of his life was his children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Survivors: Sons, William G. of Allentown, George J. Jr. and his wife Phyllis of West Lawn PA; daughters, Mary Ellen, wife of Francis Steckel, Carol, wife of Barry ODonnell, Bette, wife of Don Storck all of Allentown; 14 grandchildren, and 10 great-grandchildren. He was predeceased by brothers John, Matthew, William and sister, Marie Durnin; and daughter-in-law, Marie Spillane. Services: A Mass of Christian Burial 11:30 a.m. Friday, March 7, in the Cathedral Church of St. Catharine of Siena 18th & Turner Sts. Allentown is preceded by a visitation from 9 to 11:15 a.m. Friday in Robert C. Weir Funeral Home, 18th & Turner Sts., Allentown. Interment follows Mass in Resurrection Cemetery, Wescosville PA.
