Melvin James Strickland, Jr., of Doylestown, died Thursday, March 21, 2013 at Doylestown Hospital. He was 71 and the husband of Elizabeth (ODonnell) Strickland. Born in Philadelphia, he was the son of the late Melvin James Strickland, Sr. and Clara Virginia Smith Strickland. James lived most of his life in Doylestown. Mr. Strickland attended Glenside Weldon Elementary School, Abington High School, William Tennent High School, and Muhlenberg College, graduating in 1963 with a Bachelor of Science degree in Psychology. He joined the Army National Guard of Pennsylvania and served as Sergeant of the 108th Artillery Unit from 1963 to 1969. James began working in 1966 as a Juvenile Probation Officer for Bucks County Juvenile Court and retired as a well respected officer in 2005. In his 39 years as a Probation Officer, Jim dedicated his career to impacting and helping thousands of children become positive citizens of society. Mr. Strickland was a star football player at William Tennent HS and was on the Board of Trustees for the Pennsylvania Social Services Union. In 1986, he was recognized with two letters of commendation for performing his duties in the Juvenile Probation Office in a very effective and competent manner, one from the Bucks County Board of County Commissioners and the other from the PA House of Representatives. James enjoyed fishing, fishing, and more fishing in the Outer Banks, NC, Jersey Shore, and the past 20 years surf fishing at Island Beach State Park, NJ. He loved baseball at all levels, was a history buff, followed politics closely and was an avid reader. Survivors: In addition to his wife; Jim is survived by his two daughters, Karen Strickland Toth, wife of Daniel, of Melrose, NY, Jennifer Strickland of Quakertown; as well as a grandson, Danny Toth. Services: Relatives and friends are invited to Jims funeral service 11 a.m., Wednesday, March 27, 2013 at Reed and Steinbach Funeral Home, 2335 Lower State Rd., Doylestown, and may pay their respects from 9:30 to 11 a.m. prior to the service. Interment will follow in Doylestown Cemetery. Contributions: In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions in Jims name may be made to Visiting Nurse Home Care Department of Doylestown Hospital, 875 North Easton Road, Doylestown, PA 18902.
