Walter F. Kraus, Jr.
Walter F. Kraus, Jr., 84, of Cumbola, passed away February 8. Born in Cumbola, he was the son of the late Walter A. Krause, Sr., and Anna T. Urban Krouse. He was a 1945 graduate of the former Blythe Township High School, New Philadelphia, and attended two years at Penn State University. He enlisted in the Navy and served on board the battleship USS Wisconsin BB-64. He was a member of the USS Wisconsin Association and was awarded a Busy Beaver Citation as a photographer at biennial reunions. Walter was a retired newspaper photographer and columnist, having worked for the Allentown Morning Call for 26 years. Walter was a charter member, past commander, adjutant and post service office of the former Cumbola American Legion Post 958. He was the 13th District American Legion and held offices of post, district and Eastern Section adjutant in 1961. He also published bulletins on those three levels and twice president of the Pennsylvania Legion Press Association. He was a member of the former St. Anthony of Pauda Church, Cumbola, and a lifetime member of the Good Will Fire Company No. 1, Leighton, where he portrayed Santa Claus at Christmas visits to Gnaden Huetten Memorial Hospital and home for the aged. He and his wife, Helen, enjoyed traveling on cruises and flights to counties around the world. Survivors: Surviving is his wife of 60 years, Helen Scappell Kraus; daughter, Deborah Ann Schwope, Florida; son, Walter and wife Sharon, Pennsylvania, three grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren. Services: A Mass of Christian burial will be celebrated at 11 a.m., today at Holy Cross Catholic Church, New Philadelphia, with the Rev. Ronald J. Minner and Fr. Luke, Cistercian Monk, as celebrants. Relatives and friends may call from 9:30 a.m. until the time of service, today at the church. Interment with military honors will be at St. Anthony Cemetery. Thomas J. Bartashus Funeral Home, New Philadelphia has charge of arrangements.
