At our 50th Berg reunion this year, I remembered how great it was that Don could attend our 45th. Sharing memories with Joyce Mitchell, I said that my ambition was to grow up to be like Don. Hers was to marry him (although Louise already had the inside track at that time). I'm glad I was a bit more realistic.

I am so sorry to hear of this. I knew him as the caring and helpful person who ran my freshman chem lab - probably kept me from failing first semester! Louise I remember when you guys started dating and as one whose husband also died in 2017 this is too soon. With you in sadness.

Don Shive was one of my favorite professors. His inspiration is one of the reasons I have Ph.D. in Chemistry. Don was a model of patience and civility. I appreciated everything I learned from him, especially the lessons of life beyond academics. Although I haven't kept in touch over the years, the world now seems a bit emptier knowing he is gone. My sincere condolences to his family.

I did not have any clue when I had decided to go to Muhlenberg, or when I had decided to major in biochemistry, what it would do for my life; how it would change me. I found a home in the Chemistry Department. I found a place where I loved learning again. Dr. Shive was a genuine, honest, and caring person. He expected a lot from his students, but he was willing to give a lot more education in return. He was fair, and he wanted to push each student just enough to get the absolute best out of them. His classes were by no means easy, and to this day I remember one of his exams in its entirety: "Tell me how to build a Fourier-transform infrared spectrophotometer." I still remember the basics of how that machine works 20+ years later, even though I have not used one after my Muhlenberg years. That is how good of a teacher he was.

My husband David and I met in the Chemistry library at Muhlenberg. We both have fond memories of Dr. Shive. We have spoken of him often over the years with smiles on our faces. He influenced our careers and taught us so much more than critical thinking. We send our sincere condolences to his family.

Probably the kindest professor in the Chemistry department that I ever had a Muhlenberg. My deepest sympathy.

Dr. Shive inspired generations of Muhlenberg chemistry students. I have fond memories of TA'ing his class for 3 years and explicitly remember his lectures on cyclic voltammetry in A. Chem. He will be missed, sorry for your loss.

So sorry for your loss. Dr. Shive was a wonderful professor and such a caring man. I graduated from Muhlenberg with a chemistry degree in 1999. Dr. Shive had all of the chem majors (all 6 of us) over to his house for dinner. I have great memories of him.

I am sorry to here of his passing. He was a great teacher, I still remember the analytical chemistry he taught me. I probably would not be where I am today if it was not for Dr. Shive. I graduated Muhlenberg in 1983, and went on to get my Ph.D. from University of Delaware.
