Caldwell, Rev. Dr. Douglas W.On July 17, 2014, the Reverend Dr. Douglas William Caldwell, 71, resident of Hanover Township was received into the more immediate presence of our Lord. He was a loving and devoted husband, father, and grandfather, as well as a pastor, colleague, mentor and true friend to many. Douglas was born in Charlotte, NC on May 7, 1943, the younger of twin boys, to David Franklin and Margaret Ashburn (McInvaill) Caldwell. He attended Little Church on the Lane Moravian Church, where he was baptized and confirmed his faith. He graduated from Myers Park High School in 1961, Moravian College with a Bachelor of Arts in 1966, Moravian Theological Seminary with a Masters of Divinity in 1969, and Drew University with a Doctorate of Ministry in 1984. Douglas was married to Barbara Ann Brautigam, in the Old Chapel of the Moravian Church on June 4, 1966. On December 31, 1969, they were blessed with their first child, son Douglas, Jr., and on June 1, 1972, they welcomed their daughter, Kendis Ashley. Doug was ordained as a presbyter of the Moravian Church in 1969. He received his first call to Reading Moravian Church in 1969. He returned to Bethlehem in 1975, to serve as pastor at College Hill Moravian for eight years, and finally, was installed as senior pastor at Central Moravian Church in 1983, where he served for 26 years until his retirement in 2009. Doug was a leader in the community, who maintained many professional and civic affiliations, including Moravian College, Moravian Academy, Bethlehem Area Moravians (BAM), and Moravian Hall Square. His current involvements were with St Luke's University Health Network, AAA East Central, and Moravian Village. With his wit, wisdom and love for life, he will be deeply missed by his wife Barbara, daughter Ashley, and son Doug, Jr., daughter-in-law Quinn (Respet), granddaughters, Evan Rachel and Farrah Elizabeth (Poppy's grand girls). family also includes his mother Margaret McInvaill of Nazareth, sister Mary Lynn and brother-in-law Dan Morrill of Charlotte, NC, their daughters, nieces Linda Sterritt and her husband, Mary Dana Morrill and their children, and twin brother David and sister-in-law Polly Caldwell of Winter Haven, FL and their sons, nephews David (Chip), Mark, and Doug Caldwell and their spouses and children. Services: Memorial Service and Celebration of his Life will be held at 2 pm on Saturday, July 26th at Central Moravian Church in Bethlehem, PA. There will be a reception immediately following in the Christian Education Building. Contributions: may be made in his memory to Moravian Village for the Memory Support Center, 526 Wood St., Bethlehem, PA 18018.

Dear Barbara,
In my research of Moravian churches which televise Sunday Services. I came across the death notice of Doug's passing. Although I moved away from Reading, I know how much my father (Sam Wagner) thought of Doug and you.
In dad's eyes, Doug was the best. When we would visit Reading, we were sure to come to church and see Doug. My heart is filled with sadness for you and the family, but know that you will be united again. God's angel will be with you forever.

Pastor Doug had the light of Christ shining through him. He would always remember your name, the names of guests that you might bring to church and genuinely had something kind to say to make all feel truly welcome. In a very trying time of my life, he stood by me as an advocate and was a great comfort. I am so sorry for the loss of this great man for all of us but especially for his wife and family. Dear Family of Doug,

I had the privilege of working with Doug two times while living in the Bethlehem community. He was always just Doug to me as began our conversations. While serving at College Hill as an Intern, he offered me countless hours of advice, humor, love and respect in my preparation for the ministry. He and Barbara were great role models and we felt very much at home in PA.

When I received a call to become the Chaplain at MTS and Moravian College, he was one of the first to welcome me to the South Campus and Central Church. As always we enjoyed a great deal of conversations, great laughs and the joy of serving in the church of our beginnings. He will be missed by many here in the MCSP and the Unity as well. To all may God bless you and give you peace and love in this difficult time. I will miss you Doug, as a friend and as a fellow Southern Province boy from NC.
