I am so sorry to hear of Gen. Hays' passing. I always wanted to join the Air Force which I did. I graduated from the Allentown Hospital School of Nursing in 1969. General Hays was our graduation speaker. I will never forget her. She inspired me to go forth with my dream of joining the Air Force. She was a great leader and a great woman.

My sister has already posted of General Hays' connection to our family. I wanted to add that General Hays inspired me to join the Army Nurse Corps - she was the epitome of professionalism, dignity and kindness. The Army Nurse Corps and our nation was privileged to have her service.

I am so sorry to hear that Brigadier General Hays has passed. My grandfather was her high school band director at Allentown HS, and she was a baby sitter to my mother. She and my uncle went to a West Point dance, I hear. My family and I visited her at her at her Arlington condominium, awesome view of DC, several times. General Hays was such kind family friend and and humble General. I treasure our connection.

I served as Deputy Assistant Secretary of Defense (MRA&L, EO, EEO) and had a particular interest, of course, in this trailblazing, kind, capable leader. I first read her bio in the Pentagon years ago. I thought about how extremely brave, intelligent, professional women like Brigadier General McCabe-Hays made it possible by their example and contribution to national security for many women and men patriots to follow. Then I noticed there was even more to the connection I had instantly felt with her. Although different years, we were both born on February 16th! Then I read about her parents and realized we had even more natural bonds. My family had always been big supporters of the SA. I am in the SA Auxiliary here in Washington. I will keep her in my prayers and she will always come to mind when I think of those who went before us and paved the way for women like me. What a blessing it must have been when she was near her passing to think of all the nursing care she individually provided and also, through training of personnel and all her other managerial contributions she had made. I hope that knowing she lives on through all the nurses and other medical personnel who provide smarter, gentler, more effective care because of her leadership and vision is a comfort to her friends and family. May God bless her soul and give her the eternal peace she has earned many times over. I only wish I could be there to show my personal respect and say a goodbye not only for me and my family but for all who support our women and men in our military. With deepest sympathy, Kathleen Carpenter Kester

I know that Brigadier General Anna May Hays will be long remembered for her notable contribution to the United States Army, having become the first woman in the U. S. military to rise to the rank of General. That is quite an accomplishment. I also know that her early days were spent with her parents in The Salvation Army. We will always consider her one of our daughters as well. God bless her dear family.
