Claude A. Mackes
Claude A. Mackes, 93 of Allentown passed away on January 26, 2013. Claude was born March 3, 1919 in Easton, PA to the late Howard and Florence (Biechy) Mackes. He and his late wife, Ruth Frutchey Mackes shared 65 years of marriage before her passing in 2005. His grandson, Christopher Trumbower and his sister, Pauline Smith, predeceased him. Claude was a devoted husband, father, grandfather, great grandfather and great-great grandfather.Beside his love of boating, he enjoyed spending winters in Florida for many years. Claude was a member of Hope United Church of Christ in Allentown and sang in the church choir for several years. His love of music stayed with him as he played several instruments in his youth and in retirement learned to play the organ. After retirement he also started to play golf and enjoyed the outings with friends and family on the golf course.At a young age, Claude helped his mother pack Crayola crayons in the family living room. He first started working for the company at 16 during the summer of 1935 and still a student at Easton High School. Upon graduation from Easton High School in June 1937, he began working full time for the company as an assistant cashier. Five years later he worked as a shipping clerk. During WW II, he also spent Saturdays and Sundays operating crayon molds in addition to his full time shipping duties. By 1955 he became production manager at the Palmer plant and was promoted to general production manager at all the company plants in 1961. 10 years later he was named Vice President of Manufacturing and was elected to the firms Board of Directors. In 1978, Claude served as Executive Vice President and was named Vice Chairman of the Board in 1982. After 47 years of service to Binney and Smith, he retired at 65 years of age. Survivors: Claude is survived by a son, Brian Mackes, in Vero Beach, FL and a daughter, Adrienne Maio, wife of Thomas Maio in Allentown. Grandchildren include Wendy Bramlet and her husband Fred of Littleton, CO, Brian K. Mackes and his wife Irene of Belmont, NH, and Brian Trumbower and his wife Tanya of Allentown. There are seven great grandchildren-Ashley Nialetz, Samantha and Nick Mackes all of New Hampshire, Jared, Jenna and Jake Bramlet of Colorado, and Sage Trumbower of Allentown. The two great-great grandchildren are Jaelyn and Aleena Nialetz of New Hampshire. A brother Harold Mackes and his wife Lynn and a sister Betty and her husband Richard Grovatt as well as nieces, nephews and other loving family and friends also survive Claude. Services: Funeral service 11 a.m. Wednesday, January 30 at The Weber Funeral Home, 1619 Hamilton Street, Allentown.
