Gary C. Koons
Gary C. Lumpy Koons, 62, of Aquashicola, died suddenly Monday, June 17, 2013. Born in Palmerton, he was the son of the late Charles W. and Elayne M. (Christman) Koons who passed away on March 1. Gary was a Police Communications officer for the Pennsylvania State Police in Lehighton. Prior to transferring to the Lehighton Barracks, he was stationed at the Bethlehem Barracks. He began his dispatching career at the Lehighton Fire Company and eventually became Director of the Carbon County Communications 911 Center. He graduated from Palmerton Area High School in 1968 and enlisted in the US Marine Corps. He served during the Vietnam era and attained the rank of Sergeant. After his discharge from the Marine Corps he was critically injured in a motorcycle accident in 1972. After the accident he attended both Millersville State College and Harrisburg Community College. He later received an associates degree in Fire Technology from Northampton County Area Community College in 1978. He was a member of the Aquashicola Volunteer Fire Company. Last year he was featured in the annual newsletter as he retired from the Assistant Chief position he held for 34 years. He also served as Fire Chief for two years. Gary was an active member of the department since 1966 and has also held the position of Treasurer since 1985. In addition to keeping the books, he was the Financial Secretary for the Firemans Relief Association. He was also responsible for logging all the alarms, submitting them to the state, and documenting all training records. He was a member of the Four County Firemans Association, Lehigh Fire Co. #1 and the Marine Corps League. In addition to his passion for fire service and the Marine Corps, Gary enjoyed playing golf with his state trooper co-workers. He was in the company of many fellow troopers when he was suddenly stricken. In his honor, his body was escorted to the funeral home by the Pennsylvania State Police, Palmerton Police Department, and the Aquashicola Fire Department. Survivors: He is survived by his brother, Rory, and wife, Louise, of Palmerton; and their two children, Meredith of Palmerton and Steven of Washington, D.C. Services: A celebration of life will be held at the Aquashicola Fire Company on Sunday, June 30, at 2 p.m. Arrangements by T.K. Thomas Funeral Home, Palmerton.
