William J. Kappes
William J. Kappes, 93, formerly of Allentown, went home to be with his Lord, Saturday, February 15, 2014, in Praxis Nursing Facility, Easton. He was the husband of the late Lillian (Miller) Kappes. They were married 62 years. Born in Catasauqua, he was the son of the late William and Louise (Kern) Kappes. William was a staff sergeant in the United States Marine Corps, serving in the Pacific Theater in WWII. He retired from MW Wood Catering in 1986. Prior to that he worked for Lehigh Valley Dairy and was self-employed as a retail baked goods deliverer. Bill loved family and people, noted for his warm smile and friendly handshake. He loved his Lord and served Him well. He attended the First Baptist Church of Allentown. Survivors: Son, W. Scott Kappes and wife, Terry, of Catasauqua; grandchildren, Joshua and wife, Jenna, Jared and wife, Jessica, Jeremy and wife, Jenifer; great-grandchildren, Katelyn, Samuel, Kaylee, and soon-to-be-born Mackenzie; sister, Trudy McGonigle of Whitehall. William was predeceased by a daughter, Patricia Ann Kappes; and by brothers, Gene, Augustine, Leo, Francis, and Vincent Kappes; and by sisters, Angela Brothers, Louise Swann, Marcy Deutsch, and Helen Deibert. Services: 7 p.m., Thursday, February 20, 2014, Harding Funeral Home, 25-27 N. Second St., Slatington, PA. Calling hour 6 to 7 p.m., at the funeral home. Interment will be private at Fairview Cemetery, Slatington. Contributions: Can be made to First Baptist Church (Missions fund) of Allentown, 1808 N. 19th St., Allentown, PA 18104.
