Richard A. Brobst Sr. Obituary
Brobst, Sr., Richard A.Richard (Dick) A. Brobst, Sr. died quietly Thursday morning June 26, 2014 at Devon House Assisted Living where he'd been living. He was 96. Born in Allentown on Sept 8, 1917,he was the son of the late Jacob D. and Ida C. (Rhoads) Brobst. He was drafted into the Army during WWII where he participated in the Louisiana Maneuvers and trained to be a pilot but intentionally washed out so he could play music, his first love. He later worked for Reading Railroad/Conrail as a tariff clerk and played music evenings semi-professionally into his eighties. He was an active musician his whole life .... a woodwind man ... tenor saxophone, flute and clarinet. Early in his career he played professionally in New York, New Orleans and Atlanta where he married his wife, Dorothy, who died in January 2013 after 60+ years of marriage. He was a showman who was always the life of the party. He never lacked for telling a good (though often well worn) joke, or singing a song (especially his birthday song) and could always get a laugh .... or at least a good natured groan from close friends and relatives who heard them all before. Survivors: two sons, Richard Brobst Jr. and Thomas Brobst, both of Allentown, three grandchildren, Elizabeth of Shamokin Dam, PA, Katharine in Boston, MA and Jacob in Lewisburg, PA Services: 10:30 AM, Monday June 30 at Trexler Funeral Home, 1625 Highland St., Allentown. Calling will begin at 9:30 AM and burial to follow at Arlington Memorial Park, Whitehall. www.trexlerfuneralhome.com
