"> Gerhard Salomon
Gerhard Salomon of Emmaus, son of the late Ernest and Emma Salomon passed on to the greater trolley heaven in the sky on Tuesday morning December 18, 2007, surrounded by his loving family. Born in Schwanabeck, Germany in 1925, he migrated to the United States on his third birthday in 1928 with his parents and brother Erich, coming directly to Allentown. Being raised in the watch, clockmaker and jewelry trade, it was only natural that he became a partner in the firm of Salomon Jewelers in Allentown. Gerhard spent his life servicing clocks and watches since the early 1940s Gerhard met Dolores Rautter and married her in 1957. They were together for 41 years until her passing in 1998. Three sons, Carl, Neil and Joel were raised and together as a family, enjoyed many happy vacation trips usually riding and photographing trolleys or trains somewhere along the way. Once the boys were on their own, Gerhard and Dolores continued their many travels to many different destinations still always including trolleys and trains in their trips. Having a lifetime interest in trolley cars and trains, Gerhard was a charter member of the Lehigh Valley Chapter of the National Railway Historical Society in 1941, serving as secretary for 25 years, National Director, tour and program coordinator for over 20 years after that. Throughout his life, Gerhard planned and operated many bus tours and railroad trips to many different destinations throughout the country. He was a dedicated volunteer at the Rockhill Trolley Museum, in Rockhill Furnace, Pa. where he served in various areas over the years. He loved operating trolley cars, whether at the museum or the trolleys from the former Liberty Bell Route, where he was able to become friendly with several motormen on that line. The entire family was also involved in the former Boy Scout Troop 105 from Allentown, PA where Gerhard served as the Troop treasurer for 20 years and participated in the various scouting activities with his sons. Gerhard served in the Army from March 1946 through April 1947. His tour of duty took him to Japan. Survivors: Family members, sons, Carl of Allentown, Neil and wife Lisa of Lehighton, Joel and wife Debbie; a brother, Erich and wife Lucy; a nephew Rick and his wife Linda all of Allentown; sister, Margaret Salomon of Clayton, Mo.; niece; Jennifer and husband Stan of Forrest Hill Md. Contributions: In lieu of flowers, donations or memorials are requested to be sent to the Rockhill Trolley Museum, P.O. Box 1601, Allentown, PA 18105 or the Lehigh Valley Chapter, National Railway Historical Society, 527 N. Howard St. Allentown, PA 18102, two of Gerhards most beloved and treasured organizations. Services will be held on Saturday December 22, 2007 at the Asbury United Methodist Church, 1533 Springhouse Road, Allentown, PA 18104. A calling hour will be from 9 a.m. to 11 a.m with a service at 11 a.m. Arrangements by the John H. Brubaker Funeral Home in Catasauqua. Gerhard was not a selfish person when it came to giving time to helping volunteer organizations or others in need of help. Your family and many friends will all miss you!

Dear Joel Salomon,
I met your dad about 1970 when I was 20 years old. Gerhard was kind enough to invite my father Harry Sablosky and myself, Bret Sablosky up to his home to show us some of the LVT movies for about 4 hours on a weekend probably a Saturday. You Joel, I believe were 7 years old and crawling around under the table in the living room on the floor, which is normal for a 7 year old. I and my father were amazed at the movies Gerhard had taken of the Liberty Bell Route, the Philadelphia Division of Lehigh Valley Transit. Gerhard was one of the most talented movie photographers who chose to film the living history of interurbans and streetcars. I was just so excited to watch the movies, because my father had always told me about Lehigh Valley Transit. I was born in 1950, 1 year before the Allentown, Norristown line was abandoned by LVT Co., so I never rode the line. My father Harry, did tell me a lot of stories about the Allentown line. My father had ridden the line several times over the years to Allentown for football games and used to ride the expresses from Norristown to 69th St Upper Darby to attend Law School at the University of Pennsylvania on his way timewise to become an attorney. So my father Harry was very well acquainted with the 700 and 800 series cars. My father Harry graduated from Law School in 1930 during the great depression. Gerhard Salomon was an amazing person, a great guy, an honorable hard working man, and one of the greatest railfan photographers that ever lived. Gerhard's films are amazing. I can only say that I am grateful that Gerhard preserved the history of Lehigh Valley Transit trolley operations on film for us of later generations to see.

When earth's last picture is painted
And the tubes are twisted and dried,
When the oldest colors have faded,
And the youngest critic as died,
We shall rest - and faith, we shall need it -
Lies down for an eon or two,
Till the Master of all Good Workmen
Shall set us to work anew!

And those who are good shall be happy;
They shall sit in a grand chair;
They shall splash at a ten-league canvas
With brushes of comet's hair;
They shall find real saints to draw from,
Magdalene, Peter and Paul:
They shall work for an age at a sitting
And never grow weary at all!

And only the Master shall praise them,
And only the Master shall blame,
And no one shall work for money,
And no one shall work for fame,
But each for the joy of the working,
And each in his seperate star
Shall draw the thing as he sees it,
For the God of things as they are.

I want to extend my sympathy for your loss to
Carl, Joel and family, that your pain passes quickly.

To his family and many friends.
We only met Gerhard 3 times last July and feel we have all lost a great person. He made us so welcome, and was just so generous with his time making our visit to Allentown and Rockhill one which we both treasure.
Thanks.

To the Salomon Family: My sincere condolences on the loss of Gerhardt. He was truly a "fixture" in the store, not only for his expertise in repairing our Black Forest cuckoo clock, but a fascinating and friendly person. My thoughts and prayers are will all of you. From recent experience I can truly say, God will see you through.

Erich, Margaret, Joel, Carl, Neil, Rick, and all of the Salomon family:

Gerhard was a giant in the community of mid-Atlantic trolley fans. His gift to many of us was being the impresario for fantrips to cities in many areas in the 1950s as trolleys were disappearing from the American scene. This included towns large and small such as Allentown, Altoona, Brooklyn, Frederick MD, Johnstown, Philadelphia, Scranton, and Washington, DC. I was never sure how he found the time to do all the administrative work needed to make these trips happen. But I am forever grateful, as others surely are, for his efforts in this arena.

When my wife and I became engaged 48 years ago, we went to him for the engagement diamond and our wedding rings. Hopefully that bit of business for Salomon Jewelers made up somewhat for all the times I (and other young railfans) spent in the store conversing with him while he was trying to concentrate on getting work done on a clock for someone. During the time when the store was located above Ebbecke's Hardware, his clock repair area overlooked the 6th & Hamilton St. intersection where, as he worked, he could watch as trolleys converged from several directions. For a budding electrical engineer such as myself, it was also interesting to note that the relay box that controlled the directional switch in the eastbound track was located just outside his window.

In reading Gerhard's obituary, I note that he also devoted much time to the Boy Scouts. Again, I'm not sure how he was able to do everything that he accomplished because of many hours spent in the store as well as numerous weekends at the Rockhill Trolley Museum near Orbisonia PA (at the site of the East Broad Top narrow-gauge steam railroad). His varied roles over many years at the Museum helped broaden the knowledge of thousands of people regarding the vital role that trolleys played in providing all-weather non-polluting transportation during much of the 20th Century.

I accompanied Gerhard and other railfans on several "last run" trips as trolleys ceased their operations on various routes in the Allentown area. Now he has taken his own "last run". Those railfans who have been privileged to know him (some of us for over a half-century) will keep his memory in our hearts for as long as we remember all the excursions where we shared and enjoyed his pleasant company. His passing leaves a void, at the Museum, in the Lehigh Valley Chapter NRHS, and surely within his family, that cannot be replaced. Having a lifetime that spanned the climax of the trolley era, through the disappearance of nearly all such systems, to its current resurgence in many cities, he was a unique individual who gave much to the world through his many areas of volunteer service. We shall not see his like again.

My deepest sympathy to Carl, Neil, and Joel . I knew Gerhard my whole life. I knew him through the Railway Society, Boy Scouts, a patron of my parent’s grocery store and as a customer of Salomon Jewelers. But mostly I knew him as a friend, a friend who was there when you needed help, advice or a good laugh. I will always cherish the moments we spent together, whether it was on a rail trip when I was young, scout camping trips and other scout events, or just getting together for a good time. One of my favorite times, was when we took the Boy Scouts to Williamsburg Virginia in 1976 for the Bicentennial. Gerhard took a week off to help chaperone this trip. We had a great time. I have so many great memories to numerous to list here. As scoutmaster of Troop 105 I always appreciated how Gerhard always made himself available, whether it was to help transport scouts, organize events and handle the scout finances of the troop. He was a very generous person. You could always count on Gerhard’s support and help. I am proud to say I knew Gerhard and counted him as one of my friends. He was also a great friend to my parents. Gerhard was a man who always offer help and asked for nothing in return. There are not many people like him. I will truly miss him. God Bless him.

My Dearest Joel,

It has been quiet the Journey knowing your father. Always the practical joker. I am very proud of you and your brothers for stepping up to the plate to help take care of your father when he needed you the most. You all did a great job and I was very touched by your compassion which I always knew was under there somewhere.Your dad was a great role model for you and I know he was very proud of you. I know last Monday night when he opened his eyes real wide to see who was sitting next to his bed and he saw you he was at peace!! He really did count on you. You can be proud to call Gerhard your Dad. I know he will be sorely missed by many groups of people. The outpouring of people yesterday at the funeral was only to tip of the iceberg of the lives he touched.
I Love you, your wife Debbie

Gerhard was truly one of the good people God put on this earth. His life was an example set for all of us to follow. A loving father, great friend, passionate in his love for the things in life he enjoyed and tireless worker to make a difference in whatever he was involved in. An inspiration to everyone's life he touched.

I am fortunate that I will always have a sample of his work. He completely reworked an original Black Forrest cuckoo clock that was the victim of several attempts at repair. Literally gutting it down to individual parts and repairing them to absolute perfection. It still works flawlessly to this day.

Another thing I will always remember is how he would confuse my brother and I and call me by his name. It was a little joke he and I always had and after he'd get flustered at his mistake we'd always laugh about it. I think now he'll finally have no trouble remembering my name!

I will miss him at our ATMA train shows as he has been a fixture there since the very beginning. Always a pleasure to have him there and a great resource of knowledge and inspiration.

God speed Gerhard. Keep the trolleys and clocks in heaven running as flawlessly as you were able to do here.

Dear Joel, Neil, Carl & family,
It was with deep sadness that that I read of Gerhard's passing. The Lehigh Valley, RTY, and any other people and places touched by Gerhard will be poorer without him.
My acquaintance with Lehigh trolley people was through Doug Peters, whom I met in college more than forty years ago. It was probably on Lehigh Valley bus trips & tours driven by Jim Danner that I came to know Gerhard, and for the many fan trips he led in the Phila. area. He will always be remembered as a gentleman and for his calmness and his dedication to RTY, LV-NRHS, and related activities.

Hi Joel & Carl,
I was saddened to hear of Gerhard's passing. He was a wealth of information ahd knowledge, and a quiet, calm, and steady voice at the museum when others had heated discussions! I remember his calm instructions when he was teaching me how to operate one of the cars. He will be missed greatly, but has left a permanent mark on the world for his being there!
Our prayers are with you all.

To Gerhard's Family:
Attending the viewing of my old friend Gergard Salomon was a really difficult thing to do. Gerhard shared interests in anything that runs on rails with me -- and whatever I needed to know in the train or trolley world: I went to Gerhard. I looked forward to seeing him representing the Lehigh Valley Chapter of the National Railway Historical Society at train shows, etc.
Gerhard was a treasure and a valuable community resource that will be missed by many.
God bless all of you in his family for your loss of this wonderful man.

Dear Joel, Neil, Carl & family,
Ron & I are sorry to hear about the loss of Gerhard. Although Ron was acquainted through working & volunteering at the EBT RR since 1974, it was not until 2003 when we both started working there, that we got to know him better. We was a wonderful, interesting, positive, trusting, man & teacher. When I was sure I was going to drive that trolley right into another one & on into the barn, he had faith & everything went perfectly...without a single gasp! He was still smiling! We will miss him! To The Salomon Family:
We send our deepest condolences to the Salomon Family on Gerhard's passing. I (John) met Gerhard in 1947 on an LVT trolley fantrip in Allentown. Gerhard has been my life long friend and fellow trolley fan. He often was along on the Anthracite Divison of the Electric Railroaders Association trolley fantrips in Wilkes-Barre and Scranton in the 1940's and '50's'. Gerhard and Dolores were married on August 31, 1957, and we (Amelia and John) were married on the same day in Allentown.

To the Salomon Family,

The world will be a much lonelier place, especially for me, without Gerhard being a part of it. I was about 14 years old when I first learned there was a Gerhard Salomon AND that he was doing all the things that I wanted to do with the trolleys at Lehigh Valley Transit Company. On June 8, 1953, Gerhard and I were linked in the recording of a historic event – the arrival for the last time at Fairview Carbarn of LVT 912. Neither Gerhard nor I would know this until one evening in 2005. More about that later.

I was born in Allentown and lived in a house not too far from where Joel lives now. At age 5 ½ My parents moved us to Miami, Florida far from the LVT trolleys that I was just getting to know. I did get to ride LVT a number of times in 1944, 45, 47 49, 51 and 1953. I was lucky enough to ride every route including Easton and Philadelphia.

My first awareness of Gerhard as a real person came in my mid teens when as a cadet at Valley Forge Military Academy fellow cadet Tom Ruddell gave me his copies of the The Morning Call. This was in 1952 and 1953 when the trolleys were fast disappearing from the Allentown scene. Included with the news articles were a number of feature stories about the Lehigh Valley Chapter of the NRHS. It seemed that almost every article mentioned Gerhard Salomon and usually included a picture of him as part of a group. I still have in my collection today all those articles and pictures.

I met Gerhard for the first time in 1966. First at the jewelry store and later as an active member of the Lehigh Chapter of the NRHS, on a number of Chapter fan trips, and for a family get together at Gerhard’s home – an event featuring what else – LVT movies.

In the mid 70’s I experienced a significant life change event that ultimately took me to Texas. Despite not having any contact with Gerhard from 1971 to 2003, he was frequently in my thoughts. When retirement allowed me to pursue childhood dreams, I reconnected with Gerhard at Rockhill Trolley Museum. I had always realized that Gerhard was my senior in age but I didn’t know by how much. As I studied the science of operating trolley cars under his guidance, I began to understand that he represented much more than just being a fellow rail fan. Was he a mentor? No, it was more than that. For some reason it seemed that he was a father figure for me (a thought I passed on to Carl). As time passed, I discovered that Gerhard was only twelve years my senior, so being a father figure seemed a bit strange. It was then that I understood my feelings for him. He is the older brother that I never had. Someone I could admire, a person whose life experience included many things that I would have loved to do, but just wasn’t around at the “right” time. All thoughts that I conveyed to him from time-to-time, I wanted him to understand how important he was to me despite the comparatively small number of hours that we actually spent together over the years.

My last visit with him in November was very special and dear. We talked about – well I guess you know – LVT trolleys. We talked about how ironic it was that on the last occasion of viewing his magnificent LVT movies together in 2005, just the two of us. Near the end of the film we watched LVT 912 arrive at Fairview Carbarn for the last time. Gerhard was behind the camera. As the sequence played out, one of the last people to debark the car was a young almost 16 year old ME.

I love my older brother that I never had and I will miss him for the rest of my life, but I WILL see him again later.

Dear Carl, Joel, and the Salomon family. Your dad meant a lot to me over the last 15 years or so. Most of my training for trolley operation I received from him. He was a wonderful teacher. To the Salomon Family,

Please accept our condolences in the passing of your dad. My family has done business with him at the jewelry store for many years plus he had come to our house several times over the years to oil and check out our grandmother's clock. He and I often talked about the old Liberty Bell trolley line to Philadelphia as I had ridden on that trolley many times when my dad was a PPL substation operator who provided electric power for those trolleys at the Lansdale and Summit Lawn substations.
May the Lord be with you at this time as you go through this difficult time of bereavement.
