Captain John Sweeny
Captain John Sweeny, 90, of Allentown, passed away on Monday January 17, 2011 in Allentown. John was the husband of Doris T. (Thiel) Sweeny and they celebrated their 35th anniversary this last March. Born in Newburgh, NY, he was a son of the late Harry and Alice (Grady) Sweeny. Capt. Sweeny was a 1941 graduate of the US Naval Academy at Annapolis and was an active Naval Aviator for 28 years retiring in 1969. After retirement Capt. Sweeny remained active by volunteering as a member of the Pennsylvania Prison Society, a member of NOW, a volunteer for the Allentown Drug Line, and as an orderly for five years at the former Allentown Hospital. Survivors: In addition to his wife Doris, Capt. Sweeny is survived by his children, Mark, Peter, Stephanie, and Marguerite; he has seven grandchildren; and two great- grandsons. He is also survived by his niece, Alice Grady Flannagan, of Hawaii; and his dear friend, Diane Rabenold. Services: Services and interment are at the convenience of the family. Arrangements are entrusted to the ODonnell Funeral Home, 908 Hanover Ave. Allentown, PA.
