John S. Reese
Rev. John (Jack) S. Reese, age 84, died Wednesday, March 13, 2013 at the Masonic Health Care Center in Elizabethtown, PA of cancer. He was the husband of Jean M. Reese. Rev. Reese (or Jack as he preferred to be called) was born October 4, 1928 in New Boston, PA to the late Percy and Emma Reese. A lifelong resident of the PA coal regions, he graduated from St. Clair High School. At age 17, he enlisted in the U.S. Army Signal Corps for three years and was stationed in Greece. From his military experience, he continued to enjoy talking with people all over the world as an amateur radio (ham) operator. He received a B.S. from Kutztown State Teachers College, an M.A. from Lehigh University, and a B.D. from Eastern Baptist Theological Seminary. He served as an elementary school teacher/principal in Parkland, Allentown, St. Clair, and Shenandoah school districts. He also served as an American Baptist and United Methodist pastor in Philadelphia, Port Carbon, New Philadelphia, Shenandoah, Girardville, Ashland, Slatington, and Mahanoy City. In addition to caring for students and parishioners, Jack actively supported the community as a 60-plus-year Mason, and a volunteer fireman. Exceptionally proud of his Welsh heritage, he shared his love of music by conducting many Gymanfa Ganus (Welsh hymn sings) at area churches; as well as attending national Gymanfa Ganus in the U.S. and Canada, and directing the Masonic Villages Ladies Chorus for fourteen years. Survivors: He is survived by Jean, his wife of 59 years (Masonic Village, Elizabethtown, PA); son, Evan and wife, Linda, of Bethlehem, PA; son, Bryn and wife, Linda, of Mountain Top, PA; son, Alan and wife, Lois, of Norfolk, VA; daughter, Gwen and husband, Steve Sembroski, of Kannapolis, NC; five grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; and many, many dear friends. He was preceded in death by his brother, James. Services: A memorial service of thanksgiving for a Christian going home will be held at Sell Chapel in the Elizabethtown Masonic Village on Saturday, March 16, 2013 at 3 p.m. There will be no calling hours. Arrangements are by James H. Evans Funeral Home Inc., St. Clair. Interment will be private in the Odd Fellows Cemetery in St. Clair, PA.
